Time to bounce back! We saw the down side and saw the growing pains that come with Bucky Ball. Implementing a new system with all new players will have its downs and lulls, but it's going to improve. Whether that improvement is rapid, takes all season, or takes multiple is to be determined. The next test will be tomorrow night at home against the UCF Golden Knights at 7pm.
UCF is returning a home and home that saw us in Orlando last year where we lost the opening game of the season. This year the Aggies hope to get revenge, however both sides are basically entirely new. While we're all aware of the Aggies having an entirely new roster, UCF saw 13 players leave from their team last year, 4 to graduation and 9 to the portal including their leading scorer Keyshawn Hall and their 7'2 center Moustapha Thiam.
They added 11 transfers. Their leading scorer this season is Riley Kugel who came from Mississippi State who averages 20 mpg, and forwards Jordan Burks and Jamichael Stillwell. Themus Fulks is their point who comes from Milwaukee and is on his 4th school. They tested themselves preseason with exhibitions with Duke and Baylor but they dropped both. They opened their season with a 4 point win over Hofstra before dropping a game to Vandy 105-93. Their last game was Tuesday where they took down Florida A&M 97-60. We won't see an explosive offense like Oklahoma State, but they will try to push the tempo. They have looked great from 3 to start the season shooting 30-56. They have been turning the ball over so that's an area we can take advantage. They don't have a lot of size, but they do have 7'2 John Bol from Ole Miss who will see some minutes.
As for us, we'll hope to see a better offensive output or a more creative offensive output. We had trouble creating shots, getting to the basket, or scoring any how against Oklahoma State. How do we respond when our 3's aren't falling. Who's gonna step up and create a good look? One thing in uur favor could possibly be the Aggie debut for Mackenzie Mgbako. The Indiana transfer who stands at 6'9 can get to the basket but also has a nice shot. I'm very interested to see how he blends with this offense. I think his size will be a huge addition on the defensive end due to his size and athleticism.
Half court defense is something else we will need to improve on. Having Mgbako will help, but we need to do a better job of protecting the paint and allowing offenses to pick us apart. We'll need to cause havoc and play complementary team defense. We have some athletes, we just need to be better with our switches, backside help, and communication. UCF turns the ball over and hopefully in a home match we can get some confidence back on defense. Last game we couldn't pressure Oklahoma State enough. I wanna see our defense improve.
Having a Friday night game at home will feel nice football is in town, volleyball on Sunday. It should be a good weekend for Aggie sports. Get out to Reed and support this team. It's year 1 for Coach McMillan, he was left with 1 player on the roster well into April. Have some faith, have some patience. BTHO ucf
