Who's that coming down the track??? It's your undefeated in conference play 1-0 fightin' Texas A&M Aggies! 18 conference games, 1 down, 17 to go. Up next tonight will be a trip to Alabama to take on the Auburn Tigers for a late 8 o'clock start.
The Aggies picked up a solid win to open up conference play over the LSU Tigers at Reed Arena Saturday afternoon. The Aggies won 75-72 led by Rashaun Agee's 15 points 11 boards, Ruben Dominguez's 13 points, along with Ali Dibba and Pop Isaacs adding 12 and 11. Auburn lost in overtime to Georgia after a late surge from the Tigers forced overtime.
Auburn is battle tested, their non conference schedule included games to Arizona, Houston, Purdue, St John's, and Michigan. They lost to all, but St John's. Auburn's long time head coach Bruce Pearl suddenly retired 6 weeks before Auburn's first game making way for his son Steven to take the reins.
They did lose some talent from their final four team last year, but they added a huge piece in Keyshawn Hall from UCF, KeShawn Murphy from Miss State, and Kevin Overton from Texas Tech. Hall leads them in scoring with 20 ppg and Taahad Pettiford with 15 ppg. Auburn keeps a short rotation only playing 7 guys more than 10 minutes. So I really hope we can play fast or attack inside and get them into foul trouble. Auburn is 6-0 at home. So we'll need sustained runs or have to cause some turnovers to keep the crowd of it. Possibly Dominguez hitting some timely three's can quiet the Tiger crowd.
Auburn isn't the biggest team, but they are athletic and quick. We did a solid job rebounding against LSU, we'll need some big boards tonight from Agee and the gang. We'll need to make quick decisions on defense, quick switches, quick back side help. Auburn is athletic, led by Hall, they will drive to the basket and look for cutters or kick back out to a 3. Pettiford actually came off the bench last game although he played 32 minutes and led them in scoring. We'll need to pester them baseline to baseline and cause chaos.
Offensively, I hope we play fast. Auburn is quick and has some solid defenders, so we'll need to attack the rim hard and aggressively. Georgia got them into foul trouble last time out. I hope we can rattle off some 3's in this game. It's helped us in our previous road games during non conference. With our depth, I can't wait to see who steps up. I'd love to see Vinson or Federiko have a solid game around the rim on both sides. I'd also love to see a more controlled Isaacs run the offense and distribute. Rylan Griffen didn't have his best game against LSU, he's been in some huge battles with Auburn, if we want to win, he'll need to play big!
Tonight presents a huge opportunity for us. Getting a second SEC win, on the road, against this caliber of a team would be enormous for our post season hopes. It's going to be a tall task, going into Neville is never easy. It's gonna take 40 minutes of scrappy, high energy, physical ball, Bucky Ball. Let's walk in there and make them uncomfortable and show them what Bucky Ball is all about. We already took down some Bayou Tigers, now let's go BTHO some Auburn Tigers!!!
