Little things I like about Bucky

Slow week so here are two little things I really like about Bucky so far other than just winning. You might have others…

1) I like the fact our coaches don't wear suits and ties. I never understood that. Calipari and his staff look like funeral home directors with their expensive suits and ties.

2) When South Carolina went on big run early in first half, I bet 75% of coaches would have called a timeout to stop the bleeding. Bucky didn't and let the team turn things around on their own, which they did.

I kind of like the timeout but I trust him to know what he's got going on and if he really needs it. He seems to think about the game several levels above what I'd expect. He was happy with first Utn OT because the things we ran got us good looks and we just didn't make them. He believes in his system. I think he's not as stubborn as an older coach would be and his team self corrects. When we didn't shoot well in second half of MSU we shot more in the lane. Some of the late game over subbing I'm not sure on. Also not sure on the Turgeon method of pulling a hot shooter but it's a marathon not a sprint.

I think it also depends on the pace of the game. He seems willing to let us play through a bad stretch if there aren't many stoppages and it's tiring out the other team moreso than if we were getting bogged down in a halfcourt game.

i like the style of play he coaches his alpha male competitiveness and his personable touch. he seems like a good dude and he knows the X's and O's. lastly he can clearly build chemistry and culture beciae he was tasked with a pretty difficult task and he has proven he can bring a large group of new players to tether and have them accept their roles. i think we have a real good one.

I like how confident he is in press conferences and love his informative and straightforward answers.

Ex. Auburn missed FT at the end, I hated it at the time but his explanation made so much sense that I was no longer upset about it

He works the refs - in his own way.

He doesn't get intimidated by who he's coaching against.

He's situationally very aware.

He gets the numbers behind what works and why and is able to explain it simply.

I like that he's knows poker and football and uses them as analogies for basketball to help me understand the game better.

I like how he mentioned in a recent interview, "our goal is to win 'em all!" Where other coaches talk about what's needed to just get in the tournament.

I like his nervous energy twitch where it's kind of a laugh but also kind of like he's clearing his throat.

I loved that he was trying to give a post game interview on the court right after. I was yelling at the tv run brother!!

Look, he's got way more experience than I do, obviously, he's the coach. However, I'm a believer when, say you have a significant lead--say 15 points--and they get it to say 5 or 6, I say call a time out to stop the other teams momentum.

As we all know (probably the team moto), NO LEAD IS SAFE FOR US; YET, NO DEFICIT IS NOT TOO MUCH TO OVERCOME.

I believe this is why we were still pressing up by 20+ with four minutes left to play against SoCa.

I think he will stay. From the couple of interactions I've had with him, he's seem to really buy into Texas A&M and wants to build a program here. I asked him about the 12th Man idea, and he said returning the 12th Man to the court was a priority for him. And he's asked Reed Rowdies to find ways to get not just the students involved. He's also bought into students at games, advocating for student turnout, and has himself and the players join the students in the War Hymn after wins. I don't think I've ever seen a coach (since I've been watching Aggie Athletics) buy into Texas A&M as much as Bucky and Jamie have. I genuinely believe Bucky is our guy, and he'll end up being an Aggie great.

He's what Cignetti is to IU in CFB. I believe as long as he feels supported and we give him freedom to do it his way he'll stay here and he'll thrive under the new NIL landscape.

When Bucky was named the head coach at MB, he would only agree to wearing a tie on Senior Night. I don't think that even lasted long. He's always been against it.

I'm sure all that is true! But when it comes down to cold hard cash with an established program, money talks.

Doesn't have much to do with the score and worry about losing the lead or getting it back. Bucky presses all game (no matter what) because he wants the players to understand that is the expectation. That's how A&M is going to play all game, every game.

I'm sure his style pissed off a lot of high school coaches when their teams were getting hammered by his and he was still pressing.

Early in the season it concerned me a bit because we were letting opponents get easy shots when they broke the press. Not anymore. They have improved incredibly on getting into half court defensive sets from the press. I think this may be the biggest improvement this team has made from the first of the season.

When I said "not anymore" I didn't mean opponents aren't still getting some easy looks after breaking the press but the frequency at which it happens has gone from pretty often to not very often. There will still be some easy shots but it's offset by disrupting opponents game flow , turnovers, and opponents mental and physical fatigue.

I love it when teams use their superior conditioning to beat other teams. Makes these athletes seem less like prima-donnas if they are going to be in such good shape.

And, this team is bringing it! We will usually have a deeper bench and amazingly conditioned players compared to our opponents. That combo is good enough to beat any team if the ball bounces right, especially, say, on a Sunday after both teams played on a Friday.

Bucky seems like the kind of guy that doesn't look like much, but you absolutely do not want to mess with. Like this fella.

I've enjoyed this discussion. Seems like we may have expanded Bucky's admirable traits beyond the "little things" originally mentioned by the OP. Going back to another thread a couple weeks ago, I made an analogy between Bucky and Curt Cignetti at Indiana. Yes, they' coach different sports so it was hard to go too far. Appropriately, a few people pushed back, noting their distinctive career paths (Cignetti now being in his second year with much more college experience, coming from the Saban coaching tree, etc.). At that time, I only mentioned their both coming from small schools and quick success. In thinking about it, Cignetti's strengths seemed to lie in his intensity and uncanny knack for recognizing talent. I'm now seeing much of that in Bucky. It goes without saying that the two men seem to have very different personalities but Bucky is also intense in his own way. And, no one can argue with his ability to recognize talent and build a team. Hopefully, we'll still be singing Bucky's praises after the next 5 games and in his second year coaching here.

Indeed, there may be a physical resemblance between Bucky and Mike Vining. The word "unassuming" also comes to mind.

Yep. In fact last week I was thinking about why Bucky reminded me of someone but I couldn't put my finger on it.

We need him to try on the glasses.

I totally understood why he did it (didn't agree with it but understood the logic) but the execution of the missed free throw was horrible and what caused Auburn to still have a chance

Bucky definitely has "an eye for talent", but his real strength with this team might be his ability to get them to "buy into" his methods and style of play and play as a team. He's formed a true team that is maximizing its opportunities and potential. That is the essence of his success imo.

That's an odd thing that comes to mind when you see a guy in a suit. Especially considering it was the standard coaching attire for decades. Suit and tie will always be a better look than a coach in athleisure. Not that it actually matters.
