Yes, we would all want a 5-0 record. Let's look at this from a process-oriented perspective, though. What are the things, regardless of record, that you want to see out of the team over the next 5 games? What would give you more confidence as March approaches?

I'll start:

- A Marcus Hill game. I think he can be an X factor come March. I want to see a type of performance like I heard about from the scrimmage.

- Protecting the basketball. I see improvement here already and now I want to see consistency.

- Playing within ourselves against other high-paced teams. We've sped up or disrupted slower paced teams. I want to see how this team plays against a Georgia or Vandy.

- Bigs step up. Florida has some monsters. Need more out of Vinson and Fede. They don't have to be world-beaters, but would be huge if we can get 10-15 solid minutes from each.

I wanna see our half court defense look solid. We know there will be games where a teams breaking the press, and we'll have to be able to win in the half court to win those games

Yeah we're #1 in the SEC in defense in a couple of categories but can we sustain that to some degree against better competition?

- An important thing I want to see is if we can lower the foul count. We've gotten a little better at it but I'm more so talking about those lazy reach-ins that we still have a bad habit of doing.

- On defense, trapping the ball handler in the press more. Try to find more vantage points to bait these opposing guards into and trap trap trap. Teams really go dead in the water and the chances of us creating turnovers is much higher.

- On offense, find some more creative ways to buy Ruben space on the perimeter. State was the only team that was fully committed to shutting him down all game, but we didn't do very much to get him free

- Can we continue to compete in games where we figure to be at a big disadvantage on the boards: We did pretty well at this against Tennessee, Auburn and Texas, can we continue do it against Florida and Alabama? Alabama's numbers aren't huge here but since they added Bediako back in they figure to get better at it and Florida is right there with Tennessee for being the best in the country at it.

- Can we be efficient against fellow tempo teams: You mentioned this but this is something we just haven't really seen yet. It's one thing to drag a team into our style of basketball, how do we do against teams that want to play that way? The fastest team we've played so far is Oklahoma State and they shredded us, but I think we can all agree we were a different team back then. We haven't really faced a good tempo team since then (we've faced some bad ones like Florida State and PV), but Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Vandy are all fast teams.

- Can we get better scoring at the basket? In conference games we're only shooting 56% on close twos which is not very good. Feels like we've left some points on the board that are going to matter a lot more in this next stretch of games.

You mean other than Agee I assume.

I think other than showing we can hang with other up tempo teams we should just try to do everything we have been with better efficiency .

Florida is a bit different beast in that we have to find a way to not allow them to slaughter us on the offensive boards. I also think they are vulnerable to the press in this respect , they don't have great guard depth and we may be able to wear their ballhandlers down.

Auburn had a lot of success in baiting them into taking a lot of 3's.

Florida is just a very strange team this year. They're almost like a better version of us last year. Just a brutally bad shooting team but they rebound their misses at such a high level that they usually make up for it. Do think Agee is going to have to be very careful in that game and maybe just let them score a couple buckets if he's not in good defensive position.

He's way too critical to the mission.

One thing that would be interesting in this stretch is if we can beat a good team without shooting the three well. We've beaten some bad teams on our off nights, but can we find ways to score (this kind of ties into my scoring around the basket thing) against good teams if we're not shooting 40% from 3.

I watched part of that . They were kind of packing in a tight zone and your'e correct , it was effective at getting Florida to take shots they otherwise probably wouldn't take . Good call.

And this is where it's fun to play coach. If you're going to play a tighter zone, what does the press look like? I'd think it's less trapping and more denying passing lanes and having the on ball defender try to get as many turns as possible. I'd want there to be as little time on the shot clock as possible when the ball crosses half court.

Yeah I don't think I'd press-for-turnovers against Florida much anyway. Maybe you try it out a little bit early but I doubt it's going to be too successful with those trees they have on the court.

Seems like press-for-time would be much more effective.

Question is can we rebound out of the zone. Auburn isn't a particularly good defensive rebounding team overall but they're a lot bigger and more athletic than we are across the board.

I think Fland and Lee are liable to turn it over a decent bit if you can cut off their easy heaves to the bigs. Cutting those off though won't be an easy task.

The most effective way for us to battle the bigs is to shoot the 3 pointer so well that will have to replace the slow bigs with some smaller faster guys coming out to guard us.
Realistically we will probably never beat a great big team that completely dominates us in the paint if can't make 3s.

Would be well timed if UF is the night Agee decides to hit 3 or 4 threes and pull at least one of the bigs out of the paint to guard him.

First a shout-out to the OP, buckyball34. From your early posts, you've brought a wonderful insider's perspective on Bucky. You obviously enjoyed playing for him at Mountain Brook and are rooting for his success here in Aggieland. It's good to see you using words like "we" and "ourselves."

As for what I'd like to see as we face stronger competition these next five games, I'll stick to individual player performance:
- Rylan Griffen is an intriguing player and has become one of my favorites. I don't know the backstory on his choosing A&M for his final year of college ball vs. staying at Kansas. Assume it had more to do with increasing his NBA stock than coming home to Texas. So far, so good. How he performs over these next 5 games will provide another strong indication on whether it was a wise decision.
- Ruben Dominquez had a great start to the season against mostly weak competition. He then fell off quite a bit and, like everyone else, I wondered if he simply wasn't quick enough to get his shots. Maybe it was more about gaining familiarity with the system as we now have seen spurts where he's again bringing that much needed 3-point threat. I'd like to see that continue.
- We all were surprised by the breakout game Zach Clemence had against South Carolina. Bucky must have seen something to bring him here to A&M after 3 unproductive years at Kansas. Am thinking it was his 3-point shooting potential (vs. his rebounding prowess - sarcasm alert). Of course, the question is whether that USC game was a one-off. Am hoping he has at least one more 5+ 3 point scoring game this year. It's probably too much to ask for that over these next five games. But, you gotta dream.
- Jamie Vinson and Federiko Federiko. We obviously need better play from our bigs. Have seen flashes from Vinson but very little from Federiko. I just checked the boxscore for the USC game. They played a combined 9 minutes with a total of 2 points and 2 rebounds (all from Vinson). What about half of a combined double-double, i.e., the two of them combining for 5+ points and 5+ rebounds, in one of these next five games? Vinson should be able to do that by himself. Right?

Griffen went from Bama to Kansas before transferring to A & M for his last yr.

Sorry, you are correct. Hard to keep the assorted transfers straight. Knew he'd overlapped with Clemence but forgot the order. Still curious that he moved from KU to A&M. Playing time, Bucky's system?

Just edited my comment - thanks for your help!

I dunno why Griffen left KU . He was 3rd in mins played among KU guards last yr and 4th in points scored . Maybe looking for more PT & maybe younger players taking PT? Glad he did tho.

After watching all these teams continue to play. My expectation is now 3-2 in these games. We beat Georgia, Mizzou and Florida at home. Both bama and Vandy are competitive losses.

I want to see more confidence from our not main guys. Clemence stepping up last game was huge. From the Aggie basketball hour, it sounded like he just needed to have some self confidence and shoot the ball. Some guys need to recognize that the look they have is a good look and just let it fly.

Here's what I am looking for:

-Can our 1/2 CT D be disruptive? What I like about our full CT pressure is that we are not always necessarily trying to turn our opponent over, but rather force them to stay uncomfortable the full length of the court. Now that being said we can't get down into the half court and allow them to execute offense. We have got to continue that disruption via relentless pressure without being overly aggressive by putting 2 or more on the ball.

-Secondly, and this plays into the above point, can we at least be even to slightly below even on the defensive glass? I know we aren't going to win the rebounding battle but, and Bucky said this the other night, if we can get say 50-60% of our opponents misses we can get out and run and we are spectacular about finding shooters in the open floor. Trading the occasional OREB putback for transition 3s or layups is a win IMO.

-Finally, how do we handle being the hunted? Right now we have played as the hunter, but everybody in our conference knows the standing, and are very much going to have a prove it mindset when we take the floor against them. I truly believe Bucky is going to find everything that can be used to keep the edge, and with this being an older team that helps, but as a coach I am always wondering how will my guys handle being the hunted because there is definitely a different pressure.

Our defensive rebounding percentage needs to be a lot higher than 45-50%. More like 60-65%.

Fair point! Maybe should've said something like 50-60%. Size does help rebounding but rebounding definitely comes down to a mindset. Just edited it so that should read a little bit better.

I think both he and Self realized it wasn't a good fit. Self put together a team last year that didn't really do what he likes. Griffen needed to play in an up tempo offense like this.

He's kind of lost his way from the teams he used to build, though, which is another story

Good assessment. Rylan's stats tend to back that up. 23-24 at Alabama (26.3 minutes played; 11.2 points/game) vs 24-25 at KU (20.2 minutes played; 6.3 points/game).

To me it all starts pre-game. Stating the obvious, I know.

I'd like to see a couple more contributors emerge in the layup lines. I mean, I get it- they're all out there participating but some are merely going through the motions.

I'll be watching Young Marcus, Griff and Vinny. If we can get two more impact guys out there in warm ups, the sky's the limit.
