Why I think Reed should have bigger crowds.

I haven't read every single post on this thread, but the Reed layout is just crappy for basketball.

An arena built specifically for basketball, with an oval of seating angles and a more "on top of you" feel, closing the average distance of spectators to the floor would be a big help.

While we are at it, a court-side, baseline to baseline section of students on one side of the court (even if it's just 5 to 10 rows) with seating for the Old Ags raised above it so they wouldn't have to stand to see would amp up the in-game energy 1000x than a DJ.

This has always bugged me also, we talk about wanting more students at the games but the sections designated for students suck ass. Students are either behind the basket or in the upper deck if too many of them want to attend.

I would say that both factors, but especially the being banished to the upper deck dissuade students from attending.

This is why if anyone at A&M is ever serious about creating a basketball environment they need to target a smaller arena, no upper deck, students in good seats, and luxury boxes for the olds. Make the student experience incredible and they'll come. Right now we're asking them to come sit in the crappiest seats in the building and admonishing them for not accepting that.

9000 fans right on top of the action, engaged in the game via proximity and with no upper deck to fracture the energy >>>>> 13000 fans in Reed.

There is something really wrong if we can't pack Reed on Saturday against our rival down the stretch of a run to make the NCAA tourney with a brand new coach, an entirely new roster, and a really exciting brand of basketball. Same goes for our last home game on Tuesday against blue blood Kentucky.

It will be standing room only on Saturday. Not because it's basketball or because we're making a push for the postseason. No…it will be packed Saturday because we're playing Texas…which is ultimately all our fans care about.

Only 12,107 which is several hundred less than the Florida game earlier in the month so maybe we can put this idea to bed (and I know its really hard for most).

The losses leading up to this game didn't help.

As always:

1) We have no basketball identity. We rarely win any titles and we have NEVER made the Elite 8 ever. We have no iconic NBA superstars as alums. Winning cures all and we just aren't there yet

2) The atmosphere at Reed is not great. My biggest suggestions is do for the 12th man in basketball what you do in football and give the students the premium floor seats surrounding the court with noise and energy….which leads to point number 2: get rid of the Yell Leaders in BB. Yells don't work with the pace of basketball and kill momentum and energy instead of increasing it.

3) As pointed out it's just too easy for out town alums to buy season tickets but then only use them 4 times in a season for big Saturday matchups they find worth driving in for leaving lots of empty seats that drain the energy from the building. You can't tell me we can't figure out an electronic option where they can click a button and release their tickets to students for midweek games

All this tells us is how little Texans care about college basketball. Rivalry game on a Saturday with an invite to the dance likely at stake. 1,000,000+ alumni between the two schools, most living within a 4 hr drive and we can't get a full house. I confess to being part of the problem as I watched from the comfort of my living room.

The atmosphere in Reed is so bad. I was there yesterday and don't get to many games these days. But there is no atmosphere at all in Reed. The students are very tame compared to other student sections, and I don't think the alumni stood up and cheered once yesterday. And I'm not exaggerating.

The atmosphere was honestly more fun at the SMU game in Arlington. Not a ton of people there but at least the people who were there were into the game. Putting the students aside, why can nba fans bring a better atmosphere than our alumni? The fans at mavs/thunder games are much more into it than the alumni at Reed. It's somewhat strange.
