My case for Bucky as SEC Coach of the Year

There a lot of folks outside Aggieland who seem to want to make light of Bucky's accomplishments. Here's my take on why this season has been unique. We all know and understand how dire things were when Bucky arrived. Hired last, 1 player, etc. Many will dismiss this by saying that Coach Cal did the same thing at Arkansas the previous year, but this is really apples to oranges. First Cal was coming from an even higher profile job than Arkansas, with his obvious track record. Yes, he inherited one player, but that one player was Trevon Brazile. Cal was able to bring a half dozen players from Kentucky or his Kentucky recruiting class straight to Arkansas. Building the rest of his roster was not that hard after that.

It cannot be understated how incredible it was for Bucky, too compile this diverse group of players. He was having to recruit high D1 talent, something he was not doing at Samford. I would take the class from him where he explains how he found a dozen talented players from random backgrounds to buy into him as a new head coach in the SEC, A&M as their destination, and without probably any promises as to their roles on this team. To then get that group to 11 wins in the SEC is really awesome and worthy of the coach of the year.

Also impressed with Mgbako playing in 0 conference games and getting this result. It was a job well done. Lots of close games, could make the case for 14-4 or 8-10. Happy with how it turned out

The Coach of the Year should be the coach who did more with less! This year Bucky should be the winner!

Coach should be SEC Coach of the Year. Managed early season ending injury of NBA prospect who was expected to lead the team. Beat rival on their home court for first time since 2002. Exceeding expectations and outperformed preseason projections by a wide margin. Sportswriters and league Coaches are probably voting today.

Depending on how people view "coach of the year" I think there's good cases for Golden, Calipari, and Bucky.

Golden is doing a great job. It is kind of lazy to just give it to the best team.

The "expectation gap" usually swings momentum to that Coach in most seasons, but that may not happen in favor of Cal or Golden. The last visual of coaches and writers of that 3OT win will help persuade some voters. We will know soon.

Yeah I think the case for him is how they started to where they are now. Just absolutely dominant in league play. Got as high as 18 in Torvik in noncon, lost their first conference game, and now they're all the way up the three and they've only lost once since.

Auburn and Mizzou of all people being the teams that beat them is wild.

Were they a preseason pick to win the conference? YES

Did they win the conference? YES

So what did Golden do to enhance this? They did what they were supposed to do.

What was TAMU's preseason projection in the conference? 13TH

Did they come in 13TH? NO

They came in 6TH.

So what did Bucky do to enhance this?

Mizzou comes close to matching their size is the only comment I can make and also played Fl b4 they hit their stride.

I do think Bucky should win COY. Picked to finish 4th last and finished tied for 4th.

However, Golden has done a masterful job in coaching Florida. They are playing better than last year and just got their first SEC title under Golden. If they win the conference tourney, I think Golden will get it.

So, to me, it is between them. Think Cal finishes 3rd.

In the near future, we are going to be in Florida's spot and arguing that an upstart coach that was picked in the bottom half that finished in the top half shouldn't get it over a team that picked to win the conference. Do you know how hard it is too win the conference when everyone is hunting you?

Yes

just as deserving as Bucky.

The Gators are loaded with a ton of talent. Is that the coach getting that talent or the NIL. I don't know and Golden appears to be a class A immature ***** so I would prefer it going to another.

Byington had a good year I just don't think the narrative factor is helping him. It's not his first season like Bucky and they went the opposite way of Florida once they got to league play. Vandy got as high as 3rd in Torvik and were 16-0 and ended up 19th and 24-7.

Well if they use that against Vandy. Can also be used against Bucky.

Could but he's got the first year coach narrative on his side that Byington doesn't.

Screw Golden, with height and talent like that Stevie Wonder could have coached that team to the tournament. hope we get to play them in the SEC tourney again.

I'm not gonna worry about it. The award is a joke anyway. As a side note, A&M has been in UF's shoes before with a team that didn't really overachieve relative to talent and got the coach of year award.

Doesn't change the fact that Bucky has coached his a** off this year.

Kind of embarrassing to tweet in that format. A&M acct could've posted that without making it appear so legendary and less easily mocked.

Edit: Bucky was asked about the tweet, and he said he was not aware of the tweet as the hosts made fun of it.

I'd love to get upset, but its an award without any guidelines or real criteria.

Yeah and I think Golden is a perfectly good choice. Preseason expectations aside, it's not like they're returning their entire team that won the title last year.

They lose their 1, 2, 3, and 6th highest scorers, and not only repeat as league champs but do it by 3 games. Last team to win the league by that much was five years ago.

Look at other leagues. Would you vote Scheyer (Duke) or Lucas (Miami). Lucas should win it but Scheyer has been dominant.

May (Michigan) or Hoiberg (Nebraska). Hoiberg should win it, but May will. When you have dominant teams, you reward that. That is hard to do.
Ball Fan

Would vote Lucas, but Scheyer won it even though his program had no adversity or disadvantages. He didn't just roll the ball out there, but also didn't have to overcome as much as Lucas.

.

They had one of the mist dominant front courts returning, then they added two great guards- 5 star erstwhile lottery pick Boogie Fland from Arkansas [13 ppg] and two-time All-Ivy league guard Xavian Lee [17ppg].

Color me unimpressed.
