Time for a thread as it looks like it's gonna happen and Nate Oats will certainly be in the mix until he pulls his name out.

Personally I dont think Bama would go with Bucky if that happened since he has only been in a major job for 1 season but it would be enough to make us sweat.

What say you.

I don't know that Oats will pass the smell test with UNC; I think he's a little too controversial. They're already going to be out of their comfort zone by going outside Dean's tree, so adding a guy with controversial offcourt stuff on top of that is probably going to be too much for them to stomach.

I definitely think Bucky would be under consideration at Bama. Bama isn't some kind of elite program that can pick and choose anyone it wants, so I don't know that they can hold out for more of a sure thing. All of Bama's success is under Oats. Bucky already has a lot of admirers in the Bama fanbase, and his extensive connections there plus his playing style similarity to Oats would boost his candidacy higher than his resume alone.

I said this on premium, but one thing we would have going for us is that Bucky is the kind of guy who would hate to leave a place after just one year, especially a place he really likes. That said, I'm sure he'd be wondering if/when he would get another shot at the Bama job if he turned it down this year.

By biggest hope is definitely in Oats' history turning UNC off enough that he won't be among their top couple of targets.

Bama is the one job I would be worried about losing Bucky to.

I said in the other thread, but The Athletic reported Oats and Golden won't be candidates at UNC.

Hubert Davis - 5 years at UNC

125-54 for 70% winning percentage

Yahoo takes a stab at it: Billy Donovan, Todd Golden, Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May, Nate Oats, TJ Otzelberger

Agree. Nate may have too much dirt right now.

Yeah I think the other thread mentioned a 10 million buy out for Oats and 18 million for Golden which would add to the probability that they aren't likely candidates.

I resolve in 2026 to be more tolerant and respectful of trolls and emotionally fragile, overly pessimistic posters so they don’t run crying to the mods and have me banned for three days.

There's more context to it than that, and tournament results at a place like UNC matter much more than regular season success.

In his 5 years as HC, they made it out of the first weekend twice.

His team in 2022 that went to the championship was with a roster of players Williams recruited primarily, and that team underachieved all year up until the tournament where they got hot and almost won it all.

In 2023 they were preseason #1 and missed the tournament completely. In 2024, they were a 1 seed and got upset in the sweet 16. 25 and 26 each had early exits.

It doesn't help either that Duke has been a machine under Scheyer and the gap between the programs appeared to be getting wider.

Nothing necessarily wrong with multiple threads but the UNC opening is already being discussed extensively under the coaching carousel topic.

Kansas job now open too.
KU could have fewer qualms about Oates' baggage.

Just curious, but what level of NIL commitment does UNC,make to basketball?

Have they been taking 'we are Carolina, guys should be WANTING to play for us' attitude and not accepting the reality that money talks and BS walks?

I've seen the figure $14M for the '25-'26 team. So, competitive but not at the ~ $20M that Kentucky spent this last year. There has been speculation that UNC will need to commit to more to hire a top coach. Also, the fact that boosters were backing away from Davis based on the VCU loss and his postgame comments was a factor in his firing.

Right now this is just a rumor about self retiring.

Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self told The Star on Wednesday morning that internet reports of an imminent retirement announcement are incorrect.

"No news. All b.s. Bad info," Self, Kansas' 23rd-year head coach, said in a text message.

He also told The Star he had no timeframe to report for a decision. He had no further comment on the matter.

From what I can find, Self at KU is still in his reflection mode. The link below is from yesterday. Sorry if I missed something more recent.

Donovan won two titles at Florida and never had the kind of success at the NBA as he did in college. A job like UNC being open is about as enticing as you can get to find out if he has any interest in going back to college. Being in the NBA he's seen how difficult it is to build a roster and could prefer recruiting to get who he wants each year. At 29-42 it's unlikely the Bulls are going to the playoffs so I don't think parting ways would be all that difficult a conversation. If Donovan ever goes back to college, it's probably for this job. I also think if there's a guy who might scare Duke being up the road, it's Donovan.

That's still way more than us so it does appear they are committed to basketball success. Thanks.

Here's a ranking of coaching candidates from a UNC fan site. It has an AI flavor and a couple irritating typos in the Dusty May summary. But, considering it's written from a UNC perspective (or bias), the list seems realistic with an honest appraisal of UNC's deficiencies. For instance, I was surprised by the statement that Michigan has "significantly more NIL resources than North Carolina."

As a Duke fan I'm hoping they don't get Byington. Dude just wins everywhere he's been at.

Some programs believe winning championships is the bar.

And there are a handful of programs where that IS a legitimate bar.
People think I'm an idiot or something, because all I do is cut lawns for a living.

Interesting that you're a "Dukie." I spent a lot of time collaborating at Duke early in my career and have nothing but good things to say about that experience. Beautiful campus and a stimulating environment. Plus, as you likely know, there's a genuine mutual respect between UNC and Duke that extends well beyond basketball. Unlike their two Triangle brethren, I'm (obviously) not expecting any instability in the Duke head basketball coach position in the near term. Jon Scheyer seems to have the secret sauce.

I've loved Scheyer since his freshman year. The dude is just a freaking winner. Top 5 favorite Dukie

I just hate how old he makes me feel. I remember his freshman year while I was at A&M. Now he's a coach.

Eh. They are a blue blood and their season ended with back to back losses to Clemson and VCU. In football terms, even if we lost Marcel to an injury, I think our fan base would be super salty if we got taken out of contention by back to back losses to Kentucky and North Texas for example.

We ended our undefeated season with back to back losses to the horns and Miami. We failed to score a TD at home in a college football playoff, Marcel Reed was on the field in both games and our fan base remains super salty. Ending a football season in any other way than super salty feels off brand for us if I'm being honest.

I guess I don't get your point and the "eh" comment. I just said that injury did him in. I didn't say he didn't deserve to be on the hot seat or didn't deserve to be fired or got a raw deal by UNC. His team was having a nice season and Wilson got hurt and when it was announced he was out for the season they went off the rails. It's his job to keep the team locked in and it's like the team said "Oh well, we can't win without Caleb..."
