Will it exist at all in 25 years and if so, how different might it look?

We now in our hyper-cautious parenting put crash helmets on children riding tricycles.

My 3 boys do not wear crash helmets. Hell, they're more likely to bang their head on the coffee table playing "Batman vs. Superman".

FWIW, I had friends on our soccer team in HS that got more concussions than any of our 5A football players.

I will absolutely NOT allow the people who adopt my children to let them play football.

No they didn't. Every single time you see stars is a small concussion. Most football players experience that multiple times a game. Also, I knew plenty of guys in football who got their bell rung and continued playing.

There are FAR FAR more concussions and head hits in football. CTE has been seen in guys as young as 18.

Also, this isn't just the end of college football, it will be the end of every major contact sport (i.e. football, hockey, rugby, Aussie rules football, lacross, and even soccer and possibly basketball). No one is going to be willing to take on this liability because head injuries are simply not somethig people take lightly.

I have two little girls. No helmets when they ride their bikes AND they ride their scooters barefoot sometimes. Scrapes build character. They've been banged up, but last time I checked they're still breathing.

I've always wondered, how in the hell do people get concussions in soccer? Does bouncing the ball off your head actually even hurt?

Well one guy was unfortunate enough to dive for a ball as a goalie and went head first into the goal post. Funny now, scary in the moment.

No. Collisions with other players. Soccer is a contact sport, and there are often higher ratios of diagnosed concussions in soccer. I've had two different athletic trainers tell me they see more concussions in soccer than football.

1) I think women's sand volleyball should become more popular. I never tire of watching some of those women.
2) Vince Booger Young never was affected by head injuries.

Funny, I heard Rush talk about the liberals going after football 3-4 weeks ago. Looks like he was right. And it wasn't George Will he was talking about - it was some chick.

Texas would be the first to secede if America banned football.

Cheerleading isthe most dangerous sport maybe that should be banned too. Seriously you know the risks of playing football. If you hit someone wrong one time you can die or be paralyzed.

I played football for 7 years. Zero concussions.

Won't exist in current form in 25 years if medical trends continue.

My two cents on concussions is that like most other injuries certain individuals are more susceptible than others and are at higher risk for significant cognitive impact. Unless some method for screening is developed the insurances costs will get to high at highschool level. Once you don't have highschool, their won't be a good pipeline for collge/pros.

You will know decline has begun once we see high schools start to drop it. It won't start in TX, but unless the trends reverse it will get here.

Unfortunately, the current research is showing that repetitive minor head trama can have as much of an impact on long term brain health as concussions, particularly when the trama occurs at young ages. So lineman who have minor head hits every play might be at higher risk than a player who gets a concussion.

What about weight limits for certain positions at all the different levels? You weigh in, and if you're over, you don't play. Wouldn't that help diminish the problem (not eliminate, but diminish) without necessarily labiafying the sport?

I was talking with my buddy ( who is a doctor) about this issue and George Will's column. He said he had heard at a seminar about a push to get rid of helmets. The reasoning being less protection on the head would discourage violent hits. No links available, just a conversation. I hope that the hand wringers don't win this. I will not watch a dumbed down version of football. Everyone who plays football goes in knowing the risks of being hurt, especially at the college and pro level. I'm afraid though that there will be congressional action of some kind over this issue in the near future. Our govt just can't help themselves. Get ready, I'm afraid it is coming.

Considering science still doesn't have a solid answer on risks of repeated head trauma, it is unlikely everyone or anyone who plays knows the risk.

For this to work, the game would ultimately have to be changed so much to not be recognizable. Not only was the game itself (offensive/defensive tactics) much different in the leather helmet era, but players then were also smaller and slower. You might could argue removing face masks would remove the incentive to lead with heads, however even this would result in occasionaly horrific facial injuries. Not sure that would go over to well on HD TV.

There are other risks besides CTE. Knees blown out, all the way up to paralysis (see Daryl Stingley). It's a rough sport. That is what I meant by "knowing the risks". Get ready because I think Rush is correct. We will not recognize the sport in the near future.

When the first trail lawyer wins the first big case against a NFL team, a university, or a school district then you will know the end of football is near because those aholes will burn everything down just to make another buck to buy another beach home.

How many times a game did you see stars? Most people don't consider that a concussion because they are always fine after a few seconds. There is a vast difference between what people think is a concussion and an actual concussion. Most concussions are so small that you don't realize you got one because you don't see any after effects.

Additionally, CTE is not just caused by concussions. Thousands of smaller hits to the head are actually a bigger factor in its development. This is why linemen and linebackers have much higher occurrences of CTE than quarterbacks and receivers. They get hit in the head every play.

Yes it is a HUGE deal. Dismissing it isn't going to make it go away. I love football as much as you guys, but these lawsuits are going to kill contact sports in the developed world. The NFL is going to lose their class action lawsuit and you can be damn sure that one will be filed against the NCAA and individual schools when that happens. Even high schools will have lawsuits filed against them. Now what do you think will happen once these lawsuits start stacking up? Schools will just drop football once they decide the liability is too high.

It's either that or we totally change the pads and put padding on both sides so that hits will not be as severe. Football as we know it isn't going to last another 15 years.
