Can we at least wait and allow further research and progress to be made before outlawing all contact sports and declaring that football's demise is imminent? We barely know what CTE is, much less how it develops, who it targets, who is susceptible, is it hereditary, can it be diagnosed early, can it be prevented, can it be treated. Who knows, maybe they'll develop a pill that you can take that keeps your brain from getting jacked up. Maybe better equipment can be developed to help. Football will be fine, it's the #1 sport in America by far, too many people like it, the NFL and college football are really good at marketing it, and I just don't see the big money and the appetite diminishing. Let's at least allow research and progress to be done and awareness to be developed before prematurely jumping off the cliff.

People die.

Big............ F-ing........... deal. The sooner we realise that 90% of the things I do in a day drastically increase my risk of death in the short and long term the sooner we stop acting like anything we do can "beat" death. Shi* happens people die, people get hurt, people live their lives.

Things I have done today that have negatively impacted my life expectancy:
1. Drove my car
2. Drove over the speed limit
3. Drove while on cell phone
4. Drank coffee
5. Operated heavy equipment
6. Towed a trailer
7. Drank a milkshake (mmmm shake)
8. Inhaled heavy machinery exhaust
9. Stepped foot on a construciton site
10. Drove through Houston's 5th ward
11. Ate jalapeno beef jerky

Please feel free to add to the list of things you did today that can contirbute to ending your life sooner as well as later.

Just because you don't know about CTE doesn't mean the medical community doesn't know about it. There were papers written about it in the 1920s regarding boxing and CTE. The research about CTE has been around for a long time, so yes we do know a lot about it. Concussions and repeated hits to the head are the primary causes.

This is why the NFL is going to lose their lawsuits. The research is all there, they just ingored it.

However, please continue posting about how much we don't know about CTE and its causes.

Rollo, I get where you're coming from, but that "s happens" defense isn't very satisfying given the probabilities. All of the things you mentioned that could kill you are a high impact low probability events. The chances of getting dementia at age 50 if you are pro football player are dramatically higher than the chance that you will kill yourself driving in your life.

I disagree Malibu

2009 Licensed drivers in the US=209,618,386
2009 driving fatalities in the US= 33,808

.016% of licensed drivers died

2009 # of participants in just High school 11 man football= 1,112,303

While we do not currently know how many deaths occur from CTE I would be surprised if it was over 177 people which would put it as even to driving if the only football players we account for 11 man high school players.

In addition I would say it is less worrisome because even if we accept that CTE is causing deaths as a fact it is causing them typically 20 to 30 years later not instantly as is the case of a car crash.

As far as the legality of any future suit I think it will rely heavily on what can be proven that various organizations knew and what can be proven what these organizations preached. In the case of the NFL I think the real problem is pamphlets that the NFL distributed that downplayed the dangers of concussions even though they knew these to be false. Same as US Tobacco being sued for telling people that cigarettes are healthy and good for you when their own research had shown that to be false and they pushed it anyway.

Also note that even though US Tobacco paid out the a** for their lies they are still a viable and profitable product and I'm not even going to look up the stats but smoking is far more deadly than CTE and yet millions of Americans still choose to enjoy them regardless of their impending death 30 years from now from them.

The helmet thing is not actually the helmet maker's fault. The helmet that the players wear is actually only a 2.5 on a 5 point safety scale. 5 point helmets do exist, but the players won't wear them because they look dorky and "stupid". In this regard the players have possibly screwed themselves with regards to the lawsuits.

As long as their are people that stand up and say enough and want to play, their will always be football. Just like the Military. Less than 10% of all HS graduates actually qualify for Military Service to include the "anti-war crowd" and yet, the services have no problem filling the ranks (to include my son).

IF college football is going away - can we time it to do so before we redo Kyle? as an Aggie, I don't think I could take that combo: join the SEC, build new stadium, end of football as we know it

Every single time you see stars is a small concussion.

This might be the most medically inaccurate thing I have ever read, it is simply not true. "Seeing stars" is a nervous response relayed to your visual cortex, not necessarily a response to trauma. Yes, seeing stars CAN be a symptom of a concussion but there are literally hundreds of cases of seeing stars. Hits to the neck, shoulder, chest and abdomen can also cause the sensation of seeing stars. In some people, turning your head too fast, spinning or abrupt stops causes one to see stars. Players with pinched nerves experiences this sensation by simply contorting the nerve in question.

I don't know who told you this, but never take their word for anything again.

I got it from this article:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2012/05/03/plummer-mourns-death-of-ex-teammate-seau-demands-mandatory-counseling-for-all-players-exiting-nfl/

where they estimated that linebackers who have a long career may experience upwards of 1000 low grade concussions over their NFL career.

Pretty cool article and ideas about new helmet designs. I don't think kids would have a problem wearing these.

I peronsally think that football will become another example of socioeconomic class differences and be played more and more by kids looking for a way up the income chain. I don't see many kids from the privileged families of the future wanting to put down their ipads and putting forth the energy to be successful. I think as more of these former players suffer physically, the kids who have a choice will choose something else.

The liberals can run this country right into the ground, but no way they take away our true national pastime. We will change helmets, which will likely result in more bodily injuries over time but who gives a sh** about that?

You guys give libs too much credit.

Aggiebrad is on the right track. But I don't believe injuries are as much of a factor with kids not playing football. To play football you must endure heat, running, fatigue, disipline, pain from physical contact, and be pushed past points of comfort. Many kids will not accept that. I have learned great life lessons, had great fun, found lifelong friends and made great memories playing and coaching football. To me it has been more than worth it. Heck it is hard to get kids outside to just play anymore. So I think it will be a combination of kids not wanting to put in the hard work and what Aggiebrad said that will cause football to decline with our youth. It will take many years though.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8218700/view/full/neuropathologist-dr-ann-mckee-accused-killing-football-be-sport-only-hope

This is a great article on the neuropathologist who is the leading researcher and is a cheesehead. Two quotes that match up with my earlier posts:

"the biggest problem isn't the concussions, actually," McKee says. "It's the sub-concussive hits that mount up every single time these guys line up"

"If we can figure out the genetic risk, we could be much smarter about informing individuals who are considering playing these sports what their relative risks are,"
