What's this talk about Mumme being too old. he's 61. Nick Saban is older and nobody says the game has passed him by.

I think he'd be a nice pickup and we'd give him a load of talent that he has never had. This man could do some serious damage to defenses with the talent we are bringing in.

I agree Mumme would be an excellent addition to this offense.

Hal Mumme is the godfather of this offense! Bring him to Aggieland now!! The Fightin' Texas Aggie Air Raid!!!

And what type of coordinators does Saban hire?

Young & hungry.

re the Godfather. You don't Vito Corleone playing in his garden in Abilene. You hire Michael Corleone.

Snyder is too old to be a coordinator. Fire him at once!!!

Maybe he's just advising Sumlin and helping him with the search process. Maybe he wants to bounce ideas off the "Godfather" before making a decision.

Hal Mumme was the head football coach at Copperas Cove way back in the day, FWIW.

If accurate, I'm at least intrigued by the hats and shirts in the car. Might just be some extras to give to friends, or it's some coaching gear for when he joins the staff.
As for "young and hungry" - I'm not sure any of these guys lose the hunger for a MNC, no matter the age.
And 61 (for some reason) doesnt seem as old to me as it once did.

Go after Mumme! Why not just hire him as an Offensive Asst. and let him utilize his knowledge with our filthy ass talent. It damn sure isn't going to hurt matters.

Would be very Sumlin-like to just go out and hire the friggin guy that INVENTED THE SYSTEM!! To heck with these down the tree guys! Go get the damn godfather!

I like it!

I can't find a picture right now, but I swear Mumme used to wear wraparound Oakleys when he was at Kentucky. If my memory hasn't failed, at least he has a step up on the wardrobe.

You don't lose your hunger unless you just become bored with what you are doing. He's watched all his students go off to head coaching jobs at Div I schools and because of a twist of fate at KU he now finds himself at McMurry.

My bet he is hungry to go out and show his padawans the Jedi Master is still the Master.

How would it be Sumlin like? It would be the opposite of every coaching decision he has made.

no doubt Mummee is a great offensive mind and would probably be a great play caller here.

But he's a bit old and Sumlin's staff is all young, high energy guys.

I expect Sumlin to go with another young, high energy guy for OC.

the plus side of hiring mimmee is he likely would not leave for a HC gig.

How old is Snyder?!?!?

Edited for confirmation. Will turn 48 this month. Is this considered a young coordinator? Suppose it's all relative.

Mumme was under consideration at Bryan High School when Merrill Green retired.

I think he was the head coach at Iowa Wesleyn (sp?)at the time. He didn't get the Bryan job and went on to Valdosta State with Leach as his OC. I'm sure Robert Cessna knows more about it.

He has friends in high places in Bryan. Could explain his sighting at Christopher's.

I can assure you one thing - the fact that Mumme was spotted in B/CS was no mere coincidence.

I resent references to Mumme as being "old." To you kids, anyone over 25 is old. Mumme is only 60. When I was 60 I was running 45 min 10K's running and biking in high altitude duathlons and 120 mile bike races.

I have looked at his overall head coaching record and it is mediocre at best, but this has nothing to do with his age. I am convinced that he is a great teacher of the air raid but not necessarily a good head coach.

Bill Snyder is 73. Is he too old? Of course, we could always try Mumme's teacher, Lavelle Edwards, who is now 82.

Whatever, I trust that Sumlin will come up with an OC superstar.

I can see this Kingsbury departing thing leading us Aggies to split on who we want at OC. We got to stand behind who ever Sumlin hires!

While I do think the age thing could be a factor as far as relationships and recruiting, it is utterly ridiculous and extremely ignorant to think that in any way the game has passed him by, or developed beyond him, or that he would could not and does not have the capability of developing and implementing a cutting edge offense with the tools we have here.

How's that for a sentence?

Hal Mumme has a BRILLIANT offensive mind.

Sumlin has made multiple good hires for us. I trust him on whatever hire he makes. Chill out.

Mumme in the OC position would be a good hire!

Hal has many years of experience, he's a founding father of the air raid and I feel he'd be highly committed to ATM and the BCS community. An OC position at a school like ATM would be a perfect fit for him.

pretty fascinating stuff to read Leach's book ("Swing Your Sword") discussing he and Hal Mumme and their development of the air raid offense.

They took some ideas from BYU and ran with it. genius/creativity/recklessness

We should hire another young hipster so he can leave next year. It would look great on the sideline.

Mumme-----> Leach-----> Holgorsen----> Guy Morriss..who else?

Reading his comments regareding the selection / recruiting a QB was the most interesting. I really though he was describing JFF before I looked at the date of his quotes (Nov 2011). Could be a good hire, he certainly understands the system since he created it.

If he is so great, why is he coaching in Abilene?

Why not hire LaVell Edwards? Hes the one that came before Mumme. Hes the great-grandfather of the offense!

Sumlin knows the way to stay ahead is to hire someone willing to push forward.

Kinda reminds me of when the Cowboys hired Earnie Zampezi as the OC when Norv Turner left. The thinking was, "he taught Norv this offense, so he'll slide right in," but it didn't work out quite that way. Just because someone invents something, the little tweeks that have to happen every year can be just as important.

He started it all "Air Raid". Some acorns from his coaching career:
1) Leach
2) Holgerson (Played for him I think)
3) Tim Couch (Heismen finalist played for him at Kentucky)

Has Texas roots..don't know if that will help with recruits or not, but if he was on staff in some capacity, could tell recruits especially QBs and RSJ type WRs that we have the Godfather of "Air Raid" on our staff.

I think i know that hot dog story...

I was at the LSU/KU game in '98 when Mumme and Couch beat the 21st ranked Tigers in Death Valley.

From what I've heard...and probably the same source as Raven...Mumme wont be coming to Aggieland.

Too bad...
