Why did, or why do you believe, Peyton Manning went to Tennessee instead of following his father and brothers to Ole Miss?

I've been mildly curious as to why, as most college football "families" tend to go to the same school, or at least schools in the same state.

I'm guessing it's because Tennessee was one of the top programs in the country at the time. Ole Miss sucked during Peyton's days.

I've never been huge Archie fan. I don't remember much about him in college. However, after way he handled himself during Peyton's recruitment I have more respect for
him as a father. He could have persuaded Peyton to come to Ole Miss but he didn't. He let him choose and he caught tremendous flack for it. He was demonized by many ole miss fans at time but he supported his son.

Cutcliffe. That was the big reason. That's the main reason Eli chose to stay at Ole Miss.
Cutty was the glue that held UT football together. He was the defacto coach of the team who did most of the work while Phat Phil and Johnny Mustang sat on their fat arses and ate donuts.

I thought I read one time PM said he wanted to chart his own course rather than following in his dad's footsteps.
