The "them" refers to players.

No argument? You just described the rule Johnny broke. The players presence allowed you to profit from an endeavor that would normally not occur. If the people paid you in front of the players, it makes it an even more egregious violation. Johnny can at least claim that if the memorabilia was sold, it was after he left and he didn't see it.
