Some folks still don't get this stupid new era we are in. X's and O's mean very little if you can't get the right pieces on campus via high school, AND the portal. I absolutely hate everything about the combined NIL and the portal. But it is reality and you don't need the best coach. You need the best manipulator of the current system. Maybe it's Earley and maybe it's not. But my guess is it's not some old school guy that didn't grow up with social media.

And thus that's why its taking awhile. Making sure they get it right. If it was Earley as HC it would be announced.

Either they want to see who Earley can get to join him in key Assistant roles or they are trying to find a HC to pair with Earley as the Associate Head Coach.

This could get even worse if we do that to appease them and they bolt anyway. What then?

Top 10 programs don't hire assistants.

He is a very high level assistant at this point. That's it.

Let him prove himself at a lower level program first.
It worked for Tennessee.

If we think about the Schloss era, the one exceptional trait each year is we mashed the ball around the yard all 3 years.

Year 1: Pitching was not good outside of the occasional Dettmer start. Infield defense was dreadful. So how'd we earn a national seed and end up in the cws semifinals? Exceptional hitting.

Year 2: pitching was absolutely dreadful, but we still made a regional and nearly advanced to a super regional had we not gotten double dipped by Stanford. So how'd we manage to stay relevant despite on of the worst pitching performances in school history? Exceptional hitting.

Year 3: LSU was nice enough to hire Yeskie away and we finally hired a competent pitching coach. We finally put it all together. The one thing that remained the same? Exceptional hitting.

The Schloss era looks very different without Earley (and LSU hiring Yeskie).

That sounds good until you recognize the dude has been to the CWS SIX TIMES!!! That isn't about being lucky or some assistant.

It's a see-saw balancing act.
Keeping the current roster together, but planning for long term success for the program. Make a quick decision that is solely based on keeping the team together could backfire in the mid to long term.
It's more complicated than just listening to who the players want. Certainly, their input should be valued, but it shouldn't be the only factor in making the selection.

Not trying to rag on Schloss. He hired Earley and has done generally well hiring other assistants but hiring Earley saved his ass at A&M. Even a pretty good hitting coach makes his tenure look much different.

Is a hire just to "keep the roster together."

College baseball rosters turn over constantly. You have to hire a guy who is a bad ass mofo with proven chops to recruit and assemble a roster. This has to be a decade decision, not driven by the expediency of the moment.

The truth is it's a crap shoot no matter what.

Bahahaha. This isn't football. Forget football. In college baseball, it's not uncommon for even the so called big name schools to hire assistants to be their Head Coach.

I just looked at 5 of the "big" names thrown around and who were in this year's CWS. Tennessee (Vitello), Florida (O'Sullivan), Virginia (O'Connor), Kentucky (Mingione) and North Carolina (Forbes) were all assistants when they were hired as HC of their current school. All first time HCs.

Someone already posted this somewhere for all the teams in the CWS this year but I couldn't find it. I think the other 3 were A&M obviously and the other 2 were hired after being head coaches from lesser baseball schools. Also, Bakich from Michigan to Clemson since his name was mentioned. Jarrett from Notre Dame (?) to FSU and the NC State guy from New Mexico. So 5 of the 8 in tbe CWS were straight from the assistant ranks.
