So he came here as a "volunteer assistant" in 2021. His credentials were glowing and Schloss basically called him the best young hitting coach out there, after talking to college and MLB sources.

1. How does the "volunteer assistant" work? Do they get paid one way or another? I mean, he has a wife and three kids.

2. Was it a situation where we couldn't add him to our paid staff due to some NCAA size limitations?

3. If he was one of the best around, wouldn't we have done more to lock him up? I doubt he was coming here betting on the come that he might be made head coach in three years!

Baseball was only allowed three coaches total until a year or two ago. They just changed the rule recently, but it was very much long overdue. The volunteer assistant typically still made money through camps and other things like that. Often times it was a former big leg or someone who didn't necessarily need the money (not the case with Earley)

NCAA approved a 3rd paid assistant coach in 2023. Before that the third coach was a volunteer that put on baseball camps to make money.

From. Zero to $1million in three years. I wish my career had that kind of trajectory.

Zero idea if it's relevant to baseball or Coach Earley, but I know for a fact a very similar situation exists with younger college hockey coaches, and many of them rotate thru each others camps and showcases all summer long.

THIS is where so many of them wind up networking, having a few beers over dinner, and building their futures.
