I'm seeing that the Astros play Pittsburg tonight and they'll face Paul Skenes. As a rookie, he has a 6-1 record with a 1.93 era. Not much different than last year when he was 13-2 with a 1.69 era for LSU. It's hard to believe that college hitters were facing him last year.

To make this Aggie related, they got four hits off him last season in 6.1 innings, including a double by Hunter Haas. Seems pretty respectable now.

I wonder if he's making more this year than what LSU paid him?

When I took my boys to see him pitch against us, we knew we were seeing something special. Absolute unit.

He was somewhat of a late bloomer. He really wanted to be a fighter pilot so he committed to AF early. Covid canceled his senior HS season and the 2020 MLB draft was shortened to only 5 rounds. He was also a 2-way player at AF, after he transferred to LSU he was able to focus solely on pitching and really took off (sorry for the pun).

In one interview, they made it seem like he wanted to join the Air Force after school and really didn't know how good he was. Like he recruited the AIr Force Academy and not the other way around. Sounds like out of high school he was more of a utility guy and played a lot of positions at Air Force as well. Maybe he was a good but not elite position player and that hid his pitching abilities. It wasn't until he went to LSU and focused on pitching with a top coaches that he became dominant.

Long story short, I think he wanted to serve his country and didn't know how good he could be. They say was in tears when he left the AFA but felt he had to do it to become an MLB player

He was a bit off yesterday against the Astros oddly. Maybe Strasberg is close in the last 10 years.

Without LSU he may never have been Paul Skenes. Makes you wonder how much other pitching talent is out there with players that don't have a motivation to explore it.

Roy Oswalt had a similar rookie season but I don't think he played in college so he had a few years in the minors.

Yours was an s3 link you didn't have permission to use. His was a different source of the same image. Do a quote of his post to see what the URL was for his source.

P.S. sometimes the referer for a page determines whether it is served so you should check links in a new browser window before sharing them. But AWS S3 is a different beast altogether. Requires public permission for broad public access.
