The crowd was fantastic. Third most in Davis history! It sure helped that Waco is 'just down the road' but it was the 12th Man who really did it. In the interview after the game Mac said their energy helped fuel the rally. Great job, 12th Man !!!
I continue to be impressed by the two freshmen, Frankie and KK. Frankie was really soft spoken in the interview after the game. Nervous then. Said nervous before and during the game. Mac was the composed veteran.
Frankie is from a small town, Danbury, TX. Population 1671. Note also that sophomore Scout is from Lovelady, TX. Population 570. I remember last year Scout was asked about what it was like playing in front of the crowd at Davis. Paraphrasing, she said there were more people in the stands than the population of her hometown! KK is from a small city in CA, about 20k, not a huge city. Both of them have been great. Hard to imagine what it is like for them to play in front of so many people for the first time, in such a stressful situation. Especially really small town Frankie. Tough. Really tough. But they handled it so darn well! Amari would be playing RF if not for her injury and Frankie has filled in really well. 3 of 3 on the night. Three runs scored. KK with a huge triple. In the interview Coach talked about KK's mental mistake that allowed the runner to score from third. Just like we did a lot last year. Coach said she shrugged it off and did not let it get to her, will let it be a learning experience. This is great.
KK, Frankie and Kramer have made the bottom of the order lethal, to put it mildly. This is wonderful. "Murderers Row" at 3 and 4 and then them at 7 through 9 - wow! If we could get more production out of 5 and 6 - look out !!
I agree with Boozer92's assessment regarding Lefty. When she came in last night I thought, "just like last year". Gosh, with three other veteran pitchers we still have to bring her in to shut down a team. Of course, the early problems with the defense sure did not help the pitchers but they gave up too many hits. But, it's early in the season.
When Lefty came in in the 6th and went 3 up/3 down really quick it was just what we needed. Only about six pitches I believe. We had just scored four runs but were still behind. Getting the now-hot offense back on the field so darn quick was, I believe, pivotal. If she had gone full count on every batter, gave up a couple of hits, walks, etc. and been out there awhile the bottom of the 6th may not have been as productive. But, again, we have to stop relying on her to 'save the day'.
Clutch hits galore. I was really happy for KP when she got the 2 RBI double in the 6th. Gave us the lead for the first time. She did not do too well in clutch situations last year but she really came through last night. KK tripled and Frankie doubled in the 5th, two more runs. To repeat what I wrote above - these are freshmen, playing in front of a huge crowd, emotions high as a kite, pressure situations ... and they pulled it off like it was nothing. And then Mac did it again in the 6th, extending the lead KP gave us. CLUTCH.
Overall, I can easily sum it up with a slightly changed line from a song we've all heard 'a few times' ... "They are the LADIES that show the real old fight" !! WHOOP !!!
