With that, next man has to step up. Pretty sure it will be Henseler; we have way more options at 2B.
Honestly he hasn't looked 100% healthy all season.
He probably knew that it wasnt going to heal itself from just rest and would require surgery to fix. He then probably decided to see if he could play through any pain it caused him but after the series of playing with the pain, decided he could not any more and went with the surgery now.Gap said:

Back in the day, an injury like this would have crippled the team's chances for the year. (Being that he's one of the best 3 or 4 players on the roster)

It was a pain management thing, not a risk of further injury thing. He tried to tough it out but clearly it was pretty painful, especially on his swing. It wasn't going to heal with rest so it was either try to play or don't.Gap said:

You could see the pain in almost every swing. It's sucks for him.
I wonder if we see Jace at leadoff. Brauny hinted at them flirting with this even before GG was hurt. I know many don't like it but the heavy analytic teams in the MLB are doing this more and more. I think it makes sense.
This is probably the way to go, I agree. However, it may be beneficial to wait for Sorrell to get back to cover Jace in this scenario.
Gutted for him. Our "pain" is nothing like it is for a competitor like him. Especially so early into the season.

Pain management for an injury a guy is trying to learn to work to play thru is not exactly playing every game both in the field and at the plate. No days off at all and not even a game where he DH'd and didn't play in the field. That's just an absolutely strange for a guy trying to learn to play with this. A little reduced workload would have absolutely been something to try and especially to start with.
Feel so bad for him, but probably the right call to shut him down this year and come back next year stronger than ever. We will be alright.
Really sucks for Gavin. Hope he has a full recovery and mashes next season for a big contract.

Per local BCS CBS affiliate, his dad said it's been a known injury since last year! Should have had this taken care of in the offseason. Why risk it becoming an issue during this season?!
