It's incredibly bizarre to have a coach that was NC runner-up and pre-season #1 leave, but I'm not sure Texas is a lateral move. Ignoring his relationship with CDC, Texas has an incredible brand and is usually competitive in most all major sports.

I also don't consider Maryland a lateral move for our basketball coach. Maryland is probably more of a basketball school and although he had support here, Buzz probably doesn't want to play second fiddle to football.

He obviously started planning the move before the CWS then happened to get to the finals. The whole deal surely had a negative impact on the outcome. If he and/or A&M never wins the title we'll all regret the lack of focus that might have ruined 2024.

But I think that's the crux of the issue so many posters, myself included have.

I agree, right now, no doubt, all 3 major means sports, to go from A&M to Texas is a step up. But there is absolutely no reason it should be, other than we can't get out of our own way. Florida from Florida St is a lateral move, Duke to North Carolina in basketball is a lateral move. We could, and frankly should be in the same position with Texas, but our own mismanagement of everything other than enrollment expansion has left us middling at everything while puffing our chest about nothing. Sad really.

$1 million per year is not a huge contract for the A&M baseball position. If Alberts were to justify not making a moved based upon the remaining buyout, then that's on him, but, so long as he doesn't rely upon that as a justification for sticking with Earley, then I don't think it's a big issue. It's really just the price of doing business. All these people who think we can get by with incentive laden, short-term contracts with small buyouts are engaging in some slightly wishful thinking.

How much do you think Earley was getting offered to be an assistant coach at tu? An opportunity to be a head coach way before your time... could have paid him a fraction and not guaranteed.

From an outsider's perspective, my view of A&M, Oklahoma, and Texas are schools flush with big oil money boosters who can cover any financial slipup even as bad as the Fisher one. Is this not the case?

Rich people still don't like throwing money away. It's not like they got rich by burning money

Texas baseball is a top 3 brand in college baseball so definitely not a lateral move especially with knowing they were moving into the SEC

Maryland basketball is probably bigger than football on that campus, also not a lateral move.

Great... we are a stepping stone job

I can't believe I only became aware a couple months ago that Alberts was A&M's AD now. When I was first told by a friend I genuinely thought he was making a mocking joke. As in "A&M's athletic dept is so dysfunctional it's like they have Trev Alberts in charge."

Another friend and I used to stay up 20 years ago or so to watch ESPN Gameday at midnight or whatever just for the sole purpose of laughing at him. We couldn't figure out how he kept a job as a postgame commentator, he made Mark May seem like the smart one of the pair. Total goofball. I thought he went home to Nebraska years ago and then I assumed he disappeared. What bet did you guys lose to end up with him? Holy crap.. It's like the Aggiest thing I've ever heard. I still can't believe it.
