Mine was much more modern, but yours has that awesome classic look. And this is one of the VERY few times 93 is better than 94.

The creak, squeak, moan, groan and rattle; and sometimes need to relieve a bit of extra pressure. Sounds just like an old man to me

"Class L-1 (Locobase 222)
Data from tables in 1947 Locomotive Cyclopedia. See also Jim Shaughnessey, The Rutland Road (2d Edition) (Syracuse, NY: Syracuse University Press, 1997), pp. 163 inter alia. And thanks to Chris Hohl for his 12 November 2012 supplying Alco's builder's card Order No. S-1985, June 1946. and for a later correction on the valve gear; and for his 12 March 2020 email that flagged a missed engine-and-tender wheelbase.) Works numbers were 74376-74379 in 1946.

Replacement power for the worn-out Rutland stud based on the very successful 4-8-2s operated by the New York Central, although the Rutland engines were smaller. The main postwar passenger power, the class was painted green and, almost inevitably, named the Green Hornets.

Jim Shaughnessey drew a word portrait of Rutland vice-president Gardner A Caverly's reaction to a chance encounter with one of these engines in 1955. He saw the locomotive "struggling upgrade with northbound tonnage. The ground trembled, the setting sun was darkened with rising black smoke, and the white hot fire gleamed through the ashpan doors. He listened to the thunderous exhause and the wail of her whistle echoing and re-echoing through the pine-clad hills."

Stirring stuff, and it affected Caverly: "Never before had he been so deeply moved by the power and glory of steam. It was a subject fit for an artist, but Michelangelo himself could not have recorded the emotion that overwhelmed him"

But here's the punch line: "He was nearly brought to tears as the engineer waved for it was only the week before that he had signed the engine's death warrant." (p. 163).

All four locomotives were retired in March 1955."

The Rutland Railroad (reporting mark RUT) was a railroad in the northeastern United States, located primarily in the state of Vermont but extending into the state of New York at both its northernmost and southernmost ends. After its closure in 1961, parts of the railroad were taken over by the State of Vermont in early 1963 and are now operated by the Vermont Railway.

The Oahu Railway and Land Company, or OR&L, was a 3-foot, narrow-gauge, common-carrier railway that served much of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, and was the largest narrow gauge class-one common carrier in the United States until its dissolution in 1947.

The OR&L was not only a sugarcane railroad. While it served several sugar mills and plantations, it also hauled end products, equipment and workers. The sugarcane plantations sometimes had their own lines. As a common carrier, the OR&L carried freight, passengers, mail and parcels.

After the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, the OR&L became a major player in wartime transportation. The railroad carried out its regular freight operations as well as handling massive amounts of military-related traffic. The OR&L became the chief transporter of civilian base workers, sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines, both from Honolulu to their bases, or from those bases back to Honolulu for coveted R&R. In 1944 and 1945 the OR&L carried nearly two million riders.

By the end of World War II, most of the OR&L rolling stock, right-of-way, and facilities were worn out. The company plugged along for the remainder of 1945 and into 1946 transporting servicemen, while passenger traffic and gross revenues dropped more than 50%. The railroad's fate was sealed by a 1946 Aleutian Islands earthquake and the resulting 55-foot tsunami that struck on April 1, 1946.

On December 31, 1947, the OR&L replaced its railroad with a truck transport operation.

Its getting close!!!!

Also friends- quick prayer for my 10 year old who is having a minor surgery this morning. He said the kickback from his rifle (killed a buck last week) hurt more than the IV, and asked them to quiz him on math questions instead of counting down for anesthesia.
