Oh...I hear you. Happens all the time. But that doesn't mean I have to like it.
I've been in the professional sector for over 30 years now and I've had employees come and go. I get that folks are always going to look for the next bigger, better opportunity. I've supported employees countless times as they've sought (alleged) greener pastures. But the instant they were not giving me their 100% attention and 100% best effort, I cut them loose. The organization is always bigger than one employee, regardless of where that employee is in the organization. I feel the same way with coaches. If you know your guy is leaving...go ahead and send him on his way. If he's going to leave you...and his mind is already fully engaged with his next opportunity...you owe him nothing. Cut ties and start building for the future.
If we had cut Schloss in April/May last year when he started missing meetings and Trev started suspecting him of wanting to leave, do you think we would have made it to the CWS finals?
Plus, we would have been on the hook for his buyout, whereas when he left of his own accord, t.u. had to pay us.
It would have sucked, but I still believe the A&M baseball program as a whole is bigger than just one man (coach, player, or otherwise.) When our previous coach started screwing us - no pun intended - then we owed him or his current employer absolutely nothing. Had we been able to prove in April he was actively recruiting players to Austin, I bet we could have fired him with cause and would have owed him nothing in buyout dollars. Plus, we could have humiliated and exposed our biggest rivals in the process. If nothing else, the Court of Public Opinion would have been 100% on our side...for whatever that's worth.
But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
