Has passed. I know we didn't think much of him on the baseball field, but cancer still sucks.

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

I'm in the minority among Aggies but I always liked Jon. He was behind the plate in a lot of collegiate summer games that I pitched. He was always fair and had a consistent strike zone. He talked with the players and enhanced every game that he called. It was in a neutral environment and it was early in his career, but facts are facts. May he rest in peace

Also worked as a football referee in the SEC and was on the giving end of numerous ****ty calls against the Ags.
I didn't know Jon and don't know his family. I hope he is with the Lord, and I'm glad he won't be officiating our games anymore.

Jon Bible overuled this blatant target penalty called on the field when he was the replay official for this game. It's mind blowing how many Texas baseball and football games he was allowed to manipulate.

Fair enough. With their backgrounds, he and Randy Crystal should never have called an Aggie game. And for one who has been to many Aggie games he called and was biased I disagree. Heck, Randy in Texas Monthly basically agreed they were biased. And I should never call a game the sips are playing.

RIP Jon!

He certainly had the ability to be a really good umpire. Unfortunately, he was blinded by his adoration of one school over all others. He was an equal opportunity offender - it wasn't just A&M he regularly screwed over because of his bias. He had plenty of legendary indiscretions when the 'sips were playing Tech, Baylor, Houston, Arkansas, OU, and others.

While I'm sure he was a nice man with high level officiating capabilities, sadly his complete lack of integrity on the field will be his lasting legacy.

Based on your response I'm guessing that you will enjoy this story. I was pitching in a Karl Young Collegiate Summer League game on a typical July night in Houston. Bible & Crystal were the umpires and it was very early in their careers. I don't know which one was behind the plate but our catcher didn't like his strike zone. He thought I was getting squeezed. So he called a high FB and made no attempt to catch it. I was a hard thrower so the impact of the baseball broke the home plate umpires right arm and an ambulance was called to take him to the hospital. During the delay our catcher told me he let it go on purpose to teach the ump a lesson. He actually felt his actions were justified. I felt terrible about it and have always wondered which one it was.

I was no fan of Bible (or Chrystal, for that matter) on the diamond, but what your catcher did was totally bush league and about as sorry as a ballplayer can be. It was a summer league game, for heaven's sake...it's not like the ump was butchering a College World Series game like the dude did in Omaha this year. Either way, just because you don't like an ump's judgement, that's no justification for sending a dude to the hospital. You should have kicked your catcher right in the junk.

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Haha! A long time ago. Summers of '76, '77 & '78.
It was really good baseball back then.
