Who would Tennessee replace Tony V with, if true?

I'd think they would have to promote an assistant. The bigger question is will players get into the December transfer portal?

this is what I'm hearing now too, frank anderson or Josh Elander.

Man I'd be happy for Josh. He's a good dude.

If this happens I guess it was a good thing we did not entice him to come to Olsen when POS left.

Surely the Vols would not be dumb enough to give the job to Frank Anderson?

I don't see his style working in the MLB. Could be something coming from the NCAA like Harbaugh?

Well with nil deals, roster limits my guess is,very few will leave if any. Most schools don't have any room to add since they have to cut down the roster before spring semester

Maybe, but they all make fall cuts. HS seniors sign in November.

Please, please, please let this happen...

I think the bigger angle here is that Vitello will return to the SEC in a few years most likely, but where? Obviously A&M could be an option if Earley doesn't turn it around.

Is it really less stress? I'm not so sure. Clubhouses in MLB are filled with MLB egos because there are 10s (100s) of millions of dollars on the line. And having to deal with it 162+ games a year, and more days than that because you are still dealing with it on off days, is much much more than the 60+ games of college. I know that there are paid players in college, but you still control that team much differently.

The little things like if a player hits a routine ground ball out in college, they hustle their a$$ to first base. In MLB, if they hit a routine ground ball out, they pretty well make 1/2 way down the line, most of the time.

I don't know, I'm not so sure he would fit on an MLB team.

But I suspect Elander maybe as his successor?

I think Elander is the obvious answer to replace.

And though managing an MLB probably couldn't be any more different than being a D1 HC, Vitello hasn't failed anywhere else on his journey yet. No reason to overtly think he will this time IMO right now.

Used to hate Vitello, thinking he was a pouty *******. He still is, but he does it for his team and no one can ever doubt he doesn't have his players backs no matter what. That goes a long way for me, personally.

If he makes the leap, I wish him the best. Mainly to get him to stop terrorizing the conference, but also because he does deserve a shot at it I think.

This. The custom he has of having his team jog from the dugout to the bullpen and back during the 7th inning stretch might not go over so well in the bigs. Seems like the Giants are taking a big risk.

He's probably smart enough to know you treat grown men playing professional baseball differently than college kids.

I'm guessing the Giants want a "baseball dude", which is why they're looking at Vitello. And, as pointed out earlier in this thread, if it doesn't work out in San Fran, in 2 or 3 years he will have his choice of college jobs that will pay him a few million a year.

He will end up at Arkansas after Van Horn retires.

Of all the things to be concerned about with the transition...players being willing to do a lap during the 7th inning probably not on his radar.

I don't own a baseball team but if I did I'd take a chance on him rather than a twice fired, failed manager that "gets" MLB or reward lifetime minor league loyalty with someone like Joe Espada.

My guess is the announcement either way will happen after the scrimmage at Tennessee this afternoon.

well.. or until after ALCS but.. that seems silly to me

Why? He didn't play there and was only an assistant there for 3 years. I'd argue that he's made Tennessee a better job than Arky.

It's a great job that should be open in the next 3-4 years. I think it's a better job than Tennessee without Vitello.

Rangers and Bochum parted at end of season. Not shocked Giants would roll the dice after Bochy got a late WS Championship for the Rangers since SF believes managers matter.

He's from Missouri and apparently spends a lot of time in the Ozarks still.

He's elevated Tennessee baseball to 10x what they were before him but even with the title they still aren't quite to the level of fan support or financial backing/facilities as Arkansas. Just more sustained success for a longer period of time.
