As noted in the sticky thread Longley is gone and Atta Boy Troy is next man up. Happy to see Claunch get the chance
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

I love Troy Claunch as much as the next person but he's 18 months removed from being a minor league player

I know Earley's hands were tied here but goodness the staff instability and the timing of these departures are really odd

between Troy and Cliff and Earley, I bet we see the bats hold their own this year

Hold their own?

Well, that's encouraging

Kendall has been posting a lot of assistant coaching moves in the past month. Mostly assistants moving to MLB/MiLB roles. Timing is bad for all of it.

He says this is due to a dispute over his side business.

Not too different than what you're seeing at some other programs. Many college coaches are trying to make a sudden jump to the pros.

I think adding Cliff is going to be more instrumental towards the hitting program than Claunch will be. But Claunch will be able to learn and grow. It'll be fine.

Does that first point seem strange to y'all? Buyout isn't uncommon is it? And wouldn't the school hiring him to be their head coach pay that buyout anyway?

or this was a contract dispute.

Time for Coach Earley to lean on Coach Pennington this season in helping to manage the team this spring

Longley seemed like a good guy and I know Earley liked him, but our hitters sucked ass last year and seemed to have the same pop-up tendencies that negatively impacted the sips while he was there. I can't say I'm too disappointed he's gone.

Claunch has already been working with the team including on hitting.

Getting rid of two coaches just weeks before the season... Yikes Mike

Claunch is an interim hire for this spring. If Earley can win this season then that will help his chances of getting a good assistant for next season. Coach Pennington will have to play a major role for Coach Earley this spring.

Yes, I look forward to seeing each player hold their own bat.

This one does not phase me. Don't like changing coaches right before season, but never liked his approach to hitting

You didn't like the "hit a bomb no matter what" approach

Hate to be that guy, but this is no loss. Our approach at the plate last year was awful.

Did we replace the analytics coach? It's an important position during season.

I think there was such a low probability of Longley becoming a HC and it would have been worth it to agree to the reduced buyout in his contract just to get us to June. Now I'm concerned about 2027 recruits bolting.

Which is why I think the contract stuff may be BS. We don't know what's really going on. I have no issue replacing Longley - just in June.

I hated last year's batting approach, so Longley leaving doesn't bother me that much.

But doing this right before the season starts doesn't exactly instill confidence in the way things are going with with the program.

Fingers crossed.

We seemed to focused on launch angles and trying to hit a homerun every at bat last year.

While I hope we do hit a lot of home runs this year, I hope we go more towards the 2022-2024 approaches of hit it hard and hit it to the gaps … also work counts

I agree. Part of me feels like someone in the AD wanted him gone and just held firm against whatever contract demands he had. If Earley/Longley had any leverage, he'd probably still be here.

Assistant coaches having side businesses is such a weird concept though. If it's completely unrelated, I get it, but I don't think this was.

Yeah, I think this was a directive either from Earley or the AD to curtail outside of their role on staff. Both the S&C coach and Longley moved on due to side hustles. If someone is crushing it at their role, you don't push them out over a contract dispute. You make it work.

Seems like we hired well on the S&C side, and Earley took the reigns on hitting before the fall, so I think this is a non issue.

Primarily for recruiting. He'd already been marginalized on the hitting side by Earley and Pennington being more involved.

Not a good sign. We can probably manage to replace the hitting coach on short order, but this guy's strength was reportedly recruiting, which concerns me going forward.

Feeling pretty good about booking my northern Italy trip for May.
