Sounds like he was a risk to leave at the end of the year anyways. I thought Longleys hitting coach title was removed. Pennington and Earley will run the offense. Got to get back to the basics.. taking balls and swinging at strikes. Too many 0-2 counts before we tried swinging, and when we swung it was for the fences.

All this talk about his recruiting ability….you know what recruits better than any one individual? Winning. And if you've ever been around this level of baseball it doesn't require 4 coaches to win.

Earley with Cliff aren't going to be short handed trying to get the job done. I expect us to be much better at the plate with Earley in full control of hitters and Longley no where near the hitters. Cliff is practically a secondhead coach ability wise. Claunch is extremely cerebral and I suspect is going to turn into a fantastic coach.

There are no excuses this year.

Hate to be that guy, but this is no loss. Our approach at the plate last year was awful.

then why was he retained thru the summer and fall?

I don't know. Do you like 22 pop ups a game?

Longley was not the hitting coach. Earley took this role back this past fall. Pennington handled recruiting at DBU. At worst it might stretch this staff a bit thin but if this is addition by subtraction then its probably for the best. This one doesn't concern me in the least. At most we are losing a bit of recruiting acumen but Pennington can pick up that slack.

Sums up my thoughts exactly. Plus seeing Claunch get a shot is great. My favorite player of the more recent years. I know some may think he is still a bit green but that line is pretty nebulous and he is right on it. If not now, when will it matter? One more year? Two more years?

After last season something had to change. But the handling of it seems meh.

But it's almost time to take the field. So hoping we settle in and go to work.

How? If he hasn't been handling the hitting during the fall, why not now before spring started? This is probably a better time than the summer because of the recruiting class it's coming in. Now you have an entire semester and potential winning to be able to reassure kids committed to you! where is in the summer you don't have that kind of time.

So then again, why was he retained until this week? Is Earley that clueless?

My guess is his contract was just recently not renewed. The move has been known but not announced. My theory.

Not a good sign. We can probably manage to replace the hitting coach on short order, but this guy's strength was reportedly recruiting, which concerns me going forward.

Feeling pretty good about booking my northern Italy trip for May.

Pennington will kill it on the recruiting trail, what could be better than having a former 11 year big league shortstop sit in your living room trying to convince your son to come play shortstop at A&M

I sure hope so. But we have to win THIS year. Not dream about 'killing it' on the recruiting trail.

At this point it's baked, so not even worth talking about what ifs. Earley will prove to either establish himself or fall flat this season. He's got a roster to compete so we better see it.

Earley is a great dude and I'd love nothing more than the story to be worth gold.

I was mainly responding to the notion that the guy was an ace recruiter and we'd take a step back perhaps…trust me on this…guys that played in the big leagues and guys that had extensive minor league careers will play well with potential recruits. That's where they want to be, and will listen to guys that have been there and can help them get there.

Regarding this year, not near as much pressure on the team /Earley, and I think you'll see them playing and coaching much more loosely.

Pennington isn't replacing Longley; Claunch is. Pennington was already on the staff and involved in recruiting before Longley left, so we had both Pennington and Longley doing recruiting. Now, it's Penning and Claunch. There's no way to sell trading Longley for Claunch as an upgrade on the recruiting trail, as this stage in Claunch's career.

Having this happen in January is bad personnel management. No way to sugarcoat that. I'm not sure if Earley is entirely to blame for that (it sort of sounds like there may be some friction with the AD on the topic), but it's a concerning development. There's no way to paint it as anything else.

So because of the baseball recruiting calendar, when do you think the ideal time to make a replacement is?

I agree that the timing is the main issue. I don't mind Longley leaving too much, but that happening in January is putting the team in a rough place. Really wish this could have happened in summer where we would've been able to conduct a proper search for the replacement.

I will say though, even if Claunch is the official replacement for recruiting coordinator, it doesn't mean Pennington can't help pick up some of the responsibilities.

How about when 99% of the other changes are made, between the end of the season and the beginning of the Fall? Why do you think that's when most changes occur?

Why would you cut loose your "recruiting Ace" before the signing day in the fall, that's just bonkers! it's giving kids you've had committed only a few months to get to know the new coach.

If he had taken a step back from hitting coach as has been reported , I don't see why we're making this a big deal.

He was given deadline to make a choice prior to the season he chose to leave. We promote a coach for the current season so that we're not shorthanded during games or in recruiting/visitation and we move forward with permeant coach in May/June.

So, your plan is to recruit kids under false pretenses about who will be coaching them? That sounds brilliant. I am sure we will be a trendsetter that everyone will follow. No doubt, you'll see dozens of top assistants cut loose next January.

There's no false pretenses here, get out of here with that crap! people choose to take different jobs all the time there's a difference between firing a coach and letting him choose to go elsewhere. If I waited to fire a coach, until after the recruiting, that would be disingenuous.

You're too busy handwringing to actually look at the timing of this and understand the full picture.

You do realize that these kids are paid right?? And he has been removed as the hitting coach right?? We let him leave, we didnt make him leave. I would rather Mike draw a line in the sand and stand firm then be a get along coach.

Both coaches who left had side businesses. I wonder how much this was a factor and the AD stepped in and said no more. These assistant coaches don't make much.
