Let's have a conversation about this. I think the general consensus is that our pitching greatly improved this weekend.

I may temper that enthusiasm. My belief is the LSU lineup outside of Curiel, Milam, and Ambibbe is really not that good.

Time will tell.

Yeah! We didn't get better, they got worse! Gosh darn are we lucky! Really dodged a bullet there!

It's true that LSU's hitting hasn't been great this year but they are respectable. In conference games they're 7th in BA and 4th in runs scored. To be fair, they haven't played any of the top three pitching teams.

But it's also true that the Aggie's pitching is showing great improvement. They gave up 14 runs in a three game series to Tennessee Tech on opening weekend compared to 8 against LSU this past weekend.

The team occupying Alex Box seemed strangely out of place. They never led in any of the three games???

You forgot Jake Brown and I would throw Stanfield in there too as he has a lot of SEC at bats with above average numbers. They aren't as deep as we are 1-9, but they have at least 5 very solid hitters.

I did miss Brown. You are correct. He was undiscipined at the plate also.

I am not sure you made an argument against LSU. I do think our pitchers have improved. However, I am not sure LSU hitters are a litmus test this year.

I wasn't trying to make an argument against LSU, just pointing out facts.

sips offensive stats were looking pretty good until they werent when they played us. Then they looked good the following weekend. Lets see how LSU does this weekend against Miss. State I believe. Maybe just maybe, our pitching is growing as the season goes and shutting down the opponents

Moving Simms to game two was a change made for that last two series and it's clearly paying dividends. So it's not like a change was not made that improved things.

Our pitching is much more settled and proficient than at the beginning of the year. Our pitching is middle pack SEC at best. Our offense is elite.

I think all of those are true. And that's ok.

I think there is a tendency to compare any current LSU team to their historical average, which is pretty damn good. Clearly this year's team isn't meeting their standards but they are still a pretty fair ballclub.

I don't think our pitching has been at a world series clinching level, but they are improving. And with our hitting, our pitching doesn't have to be at that level.

Graphic they showed a few times during the broadcast had LSU projected as a 3 seed in regionals. I think any Host would be nervous about getting LSU in their group.

I don't see LSU making a regional unless they win some games. They have been swept 2 series in a row. And struggled on Tuesday.

LSU has their work cut of for them to make the tournament. They have 6 SEC wins with series @ Miss State and @ UGA. Home against USCe and UF. They need to find a minimum of 7 wins out of those 12 games.

Do they tend to get a lot of freebases?

There was a point early in game 3 where the announcers mentioned our pitchers only gave up 3 walks in the series to that point. Its kinda hard to advance to RISP if 1b is unoccupied.

Also, it felt like most of their hits were either solo HR or singles. Very few extra base hits, like half a dozen or so across 3 games.

LSU's lineup reminded me of our's last year. Some big names at the top, but once you look a bit closer there's not much more after that.

Regardless, still a great performance from our staff.

Coming into the weekend, LSU was 3rd in runs per game in conference games. Below is total number of runs scored during each of LSU's conference series:

Vandy - 31
OU - 12
UK - 28
Tennessee - 24
Ole Miss - 12

Texas A&M - 8

So while I don't think LSUs offense is great, they've put up numbers and our pitching staff did better than anyone else. It was a good weekend for our staff and hopefully we see more of it.

Another important thing is that Earley and Kelly did not attempt to extend Sdao and Moss once they were showing signs of being gassed. They pulled them at the right time. That's where we have been burned a ton

Generally agree here. I don't think that was handled as well by Jonhson/Yeskie.

Wish he could give us 6 innings. Tough to finish the game with your pen for 5 innings

Easier to do with Simms going in game two. More rested bullpen arms. Just another benefit of moving him to Saturday.

There was no need. If we'd run through the bullpen on Friday and Saturday, maybe you give him some more leash, but, with Lyons and Freshcorn available, there was no sense in stretching him out just to see if he could do it.

Earley managed the pitching changes better than he ever had before…maybe he is getting a better feel on this which is a great sign

I don't think it's feel as much as knowing what he has and what situations are best for the bullpen. Any idiot on TexAgs can say "he's getting hit hard, pull him" but we also don't have to live with uncertainty in the guy coming in. IMO, the pen guys defining roles for themselves is (along with moving Sims up to Saturday) the key to the improvement we've seen in the staff as a whole.

Agree. My point is he has better tools. Jay Johnson is an elite coach and he looks totally lost right now. I'm not saying Earley is anywhere close to that level but tools help.
