SoCal teams really aren't that good in hardball anymore. There are certainly a few that are really good like UCLA, but as a whole that region isn't nearly as strong as they once were.

UC System Teams with RPI (with number of games UCLA played against them this season)

31 UC Santa Barbara - played 2 games
73 UC Berkeley
103 UC San Diego - played 3 games
121 UC Irvine - played 2 game
151 UC Davis
272 UC Riverside
241 UC San Francisco
UC Santa Cruz - NO D1 Team
UC Merced - not D1

That isn't nearly as strong as the old Big 10 teams that are on UCLA's schedule this year.

Even if you add other non-UC system SoCal school, it doesn't help. SoCal teams in the top 130 RPI are

130 Sacramento State - played 3 games


Their SOS is 31. They only have 3-4 road trips to the old Big 10 teams each year. Is it as nice as trips to SEC schools and SEC stadium? No (and we are definitely going to recruit against it). But it also isn't nearly as bad as some like to make it out either. As a college, kid...taking a couple trips a year across the country to random cities in the Midwest is hardly that big of a deal.
