I haven't seen the updated number in a headline in 3 days or more. Anyone know where it stands?

Seeing between 59 and 62 US deaths depending on the site up from 40 Friday and 49-50 last night. US data seems to be coming in slower than other countries right now.

I know NYT sucks but some good data there.

And yet people are still trying to prevent deaths by car accident. What point are you trying to make? We should all stop trying and accept the inevitable?

And if overnight that car crash figure kept doubling....100.....200.....400..... no one would care or get paranoid?

I think the reason we aren't seeing these numbers in the headlines is that it doesn't support the hysterical narrative of apocalyptic end times.

No one get the song reference?
But see posters above...the numbers aren't high YET.
It has the potential to be catastrophic

This is imo the most threatening event to the US since the Cuban missile crisis.

Italy went from 1266 to 1809 in the last 48 hours. From 197 last Friday.

We're 6-10 days behind Italy with 5.5 times the population.

it is idiotic to compare Italy to U.S. Italy has a substantially older population, higher population density, higher percentage of smokers and substantially lower quality medical care facilities.

Why is this concept so hard for some people to understand? There is a difference between panic and smart precautions when we have the ability to adjust based upon material facts.

Safe from trolls.

Take it to the politics board. You will find the people you are looking for over there.

Good grief. Let the self-righteousness flow on.
Dude I am just following the rules. I have my opinions too but am giving them on the correct board. Read the sticky

US numbers are coming slowly because the hotspots have stopped testing. As a doc on another thread posted, the signs are obvious once you've seen a few dozen. No need to waste a test.

If a person dies without being tested, they don't make the official list.

From the staff post up-top: "To be clear: This is not a place to post your opinion as fact or to post information not rooted in clear facts. This is not a place to have political arguments or to detail your opinions about how well or poorly the government is handling the issue. This is not a place to rant about media conspiracies. This is not a place to critique other people for their level of concern or efforts to prepare. There are forums for (some of) those conversations, but they don't belong here."

These numbers are not accurate because most people haven't been tested. And people that are close to dying they are choosing not to waste tests on them

Dallas county said on Friday they had the resources to test 40 people. They hoped in a week for that to go up to 90. They can test 40 people in a county of over 2.5 million people.

Which numbers specifically? All? Like there are more cases both of recovery and death?

Italy's older population certainly has something to do with it. However, Italy has more hospital beds per capita, and more ICU beds per capita than the US.

That would be accurate. If you aren't documenting all the cases (and it's not close) then you can't accurately document the number of deaths and recoveries

Exactly.

I would assume the CDC as well as most major organizations like, say, Scott & White, have some kind of variable they understand and apply to confirmed vs true totals of any sickness. And I would also assume that people in those organizations are using those adjusted numbers to advise on the decisions being made. But they clearly are not being published right now for Coronavirus

If that is a wrong assumption then by all means someone who knows more please tell me.

And they are generally in better shape. America is much fatter than Italy

This is accurate. It's going to hit harder here than in Italy unless people are responsible and start self-isolating. When it gets into rural communities it will hit really hard since they were already lacking in hospital capacity.

Some people have immunity to the flu. 50% of Americans get a flu shot every year. We have antivirals to treat seasonal flu. We have none of the above for this novel virus. So your comparison is moot.

I got the flu vaccine and still got the flu. Tamiflu's side effects of severe nausea were worse than the flu.
Of course. But as I am sure you understand their are many variations of flu. The vaccine protects you from many, but not all, variations. There would be FAR more cases of flu every year if people were not vaccinated.
