Closures have begun on bars and restaurants...OH governor just announced ordered closure on all restaurants and bars starting tonight (restaurants can continue as take out only) and DC is now closing clubs / bars and restricting dining or congregating in a bar that's part of a restaurant...they must also space tables a minimum of 6 feet.

Entire economy grinding to a halt.

I don't think folks realize how interconnected this all is.

Could be years to recover from all this.

If at all...everyone is reacting on a micro level and ignoring the macro consequences...

For real. The virus is serious.... but I'm wondering how many more lives will be affected by shutting it all down. These decisions are hard ones and is either one correct?

Closing down small businesses can put them out of business in no time. More unemployment. People losing homes/apartments. Can't feed themselves or their children leading to more sickness and hospital stays. Where do we draw the line? There's going to have to be a lot of compassion and understanding coming from landlords both domestic and business or else this could get real bad real fast.

I think that one thing we have to remember is that inundating hospitals will affect more than just coronavirus patients. It will affect the guy having a heart attack, and the woman having labor complications too. If we got to the point Italy is at, there would just be no room in the hospitals.

No mandated closures here, but just saw a Facebook from a local restaurant that is closing at 4pm today because it's been so slow.

However, I walked down to a local restaurant for a beer around 3pm yesterday and it was SRO.

Whats the statistic thats always thrown around?

60% of the US economy is small business?

I'm less worried about this virus **** as I am a massive economic collapse which could make 9-11 and 2008 look mild.

After 9-11 it was the airlines and tourism that was hit hard. Now we are talking about every ******* industry, plus O&G which already has taken a hit for unrelated reasons.

On the plus side, breaking the economy's kneecaps will keep the healthcare industry from collapsing. That would lead to the horrors of UHC.

Ohio restaurants can still do pickup or delivery.

I am very mixed about the restaurant closures. On one hand, it is going to hurt small business big time. That said, if a 2-3 week closure can nip this virus in the bud, we might be better off with a short closure. If this threat is real and we don't stop it now, the economic impact could be much worse in the long run.

Which means wait staff will have $0 income to pay bills, rent, feed kids, etc.

A 2-3 week closure isn't "short" for a lot of small businesses. It's not a light switch. You don't just flip it back on when you come back in 3 weeks.

Clearly he's using "short" in the relative sense.

I would think that an increase in pickup orders will cause more lines/gatherings waiting to pick up food

Many of us have saved thousands of dollars in cancelled spring break plans recently....and as soon as it is safe to congregate in public places again, I plan to spend all of those dollars on things we've waited on for whatever reason to help give the economy the boost it needs to recover from the virus and the 20 to 30 day shutdown. I'd encourage others that can afford to do so, to consider a similar approach for their families.

Austin restaurants have a similar requirement for table spacing. I picked up my daughter from the airport yesterday and then we ate at Moonshines, where our son works. The patio was nice but he said it's usually packed at that time of day, 5 pm. They also have to change bathroom signs from "employees must wash hands" to "Everyone", duh. Driving home I noticed Dave & Busters was packed as well as a BJ's along mopac.

Excellent advice! Plus, after being cooped up for so long, I think most Americans will likely go on an eating out/entertainment frenzy once this virus is dealt with.

One of our local businesses suggested purchasing gift cards (directly) as a way to help them through tight times.

Nope. Not going to do that. What good is a gift card if they close their doors. I know that sounds heartless.

Great advice, and something in many instances you can do from the comfort of your home.

Say in 48hrs Trump reacts an locks down everything 2 week/ 30 days something. Everybody quarantined. Thinking besides healthcare grocery & drugstores remain open and 24hr curfew except for sick transport or shopping basics.

People out there are believing this is going to happen.

The MSM is going nuts, the heard of lemmings is forming.

Park City, UT just closed all bars and restaurants unless the customer picks up curbside and pays with credit card; no cash to change hands.

I read that the UK is considering ordering everyone over 70 into home quarantine. If that happens I would lose my job. Hopefully we will not reach that stage.

I am highly limiting my outside contacts since my school is closed right now. Will use the 4 hour window we have tomorrow ti get some things from my classroom Other than that I did a grocery pick up even if many items not available and hit a dollar general right at opening. Found a few more things and used hand sanitzer the moment I got back in car then washed hands when I got home.

But if the schools open, I will have to work or lose my job. They don't let us use leave to keep from getting sick, just fmla for if we are sick.

I work at a bridal salon. no closure yet, but we are commissioned sales. This is our busiest time of year and we are slowwwww. I've got emergency savings, but I worry for my coworkers. Not a good deal if we have to shut doors.

This could make many significant changes in how society conducts life. Many more person will be ordering online for most everything they need skyrocketing online saies.

Once we get back to some normanlcy, people will see that they can continue to order online.

Other than restaurants, this may be the final nail in the coffin for local retail stores.
