We just got an email from our Intermediate school that they will be doing some distant learning via the web. And those that don't have access will be offered a time to pickup assignments. I don't believe teachers would work without pay.

Can't imagine not paying teachers during this. It is in the budget, the State is still sending it's portion of the funding. Really no excuse to not pay teachers.

My parents were both teachers. Their pay was divided into twelve months even though they didn't work twelve months. Seems like it would be difficult to say we're not paying you for this period of time school is out since they aren't paid necessarily by hours they worked the week before.

Schools get funding from the state based on attendance from what I understand. So one would reason no students no funding. There's going to be more to this. My parents were paid during shut downs for hurricanes that went on for several weeks.

My guess is that it's some form of administrative formality.

I'm confused. Two different people have told me that Conroe ISD sent out an email that said students will go to online learning. Teachers will have to work to make that happen. Why is paying them for that work even up for discussion?

Why wouldn't they move to online learning? That's what my school is doing. We saw this coming, so we've been preparing and practicing with the kids for several weeks. The country shut down schools as of today, so we begin Virtual Learning on Wednesday.

Schools receive state funding based upon average daily attendance. The State has said already that calculation will not include the days that schools are closed due to this and that funding will be unimpaired. Schools are also funded locally through property taxes. The school sets the budget in August and that budget includes payroll for teachers who are on a 9 month contract. They aren't hourly employees. There is no reason or basis to withhold salary for this.

If I have to guess (and a guess is all it is since the full description of the action item is not available), it's a request to provide pay to teachers during the shutdown period and that regular compensation would start back up when the school opens back up (online or whatever).

I've seen other school boards do similar things for weather days or other shut downs.

This is 0% accurate. Emails just went out to teachers to prepare for online instruction starting next week. Not many of them are going to be willing to do that while they aren't getting paid.

Not to mention the fact that if they decided to not pay the teachers they'd have a hell of a time trying to retain teachers in the future. It'd be mass exodus if thats the kind of support the ISD and community offered.
