"Kevin Durant was among four members of the Brooklyn Nets who tested positive for the coronavirus, the superstar told The Athletic."

The high proportion of celebrities testing positive lets you know the total number reported are likely extremely low in comparison to the actual number.

Plus celebrities' lifestyles are such that they are out and about a lot more, travel often and arein direct contact with a lot more people than most of us.

I do think younger people, who are single, go out often and socialize a lot are very susceptible to infection with the virus and those are the least likely to show many signs and spread it.

It tells me that a lot of normal folks (not worthy of testing) have it and don't have any symptoms. All the popular kids are getting tested and lots are coming back positive.

Yep, the celebrities just have access to tests that random people don't.

Yep, access that others don't. Those tests are in demand no matter who conducted them.

That's the way the whole world works, not just health care or preventive medicine.

That will never change.

Saw a post after Gobert tested positive that showed how the entire NBA could trace a physical interaction (playing a game) with the Jazz, or a team who played the Jazz, within just a 5 day span. If it passes as easily as they say I wouldn't be surprised if half the NBA has it

Have that many elites tested positive? I can think of only a few.

Personally, I think this has been in the U.S. since about early December, and hundreds of thousands if not millions have already had it.

Bingo... I believe the same thing..

This stuffs everywhere... most cases don't even register, but some will be serious and require serious hospitalization.. but not very many

7 in the NBA, which is pretty high considering there's only 500 nba players.

Yes, but they all have direct contact with each other so a higher spread would make sense.

To reiterate what others on this thread have already said, this is the part that's concerning:
Quote:

"Of the four, one player is exhibiting symptoms while three are asymptomatic," the team added in a statement.
Those three without symptoms never would have gotten tested if they didn't play in the NBA, so there's no telling how many of us probably already have it and will never know.

This. My wife had all the symptoms in January. It took her 2-3 weeks to get over it, but she had tested negative for flu.

Anecdotally, every person I've talked to from work (I'm a teacher) has described the same phenomenon with themselves or family members (as well as our nurse, who said something viral was going around in January / February from people who normally did not get sick, but it knocked them on their butts for a week or two).
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

This happened to my family in February. Both my daughters and my wife got the flu. The girls each missed 4 days of school and my wife was down for a week. I never got it somehow.

If that was true, you'd see a large up tick in hospitalizations for pneumonia. If 80% of the cases are serious, and there are millions infected, then you'd expect 200,000 hospitalizations. Likely, those would have been in population centers, and not spread out of the country, so you'd see a lot more people already hospitalized in NY, SF, Chicago, etc.

The confounding part of this theory is that if it had been around since December, you'd see a lot more situations like the nursing home in Washington.

Celebrities are using their status and resources to the front of the lines for testing, and many are showing up positive.

I agree with the poster above - to me this indicates the virus has spread much much further than people realize. However, the good news is that the severer symptom rate, hospitalization rate and mortality rate are all also much lower than the numbers being reported.

People keep pointing to Italy and Wuhan as the nightmare scenarios - but like 1/2 of the males in Wuhan are heavy smokers and 23% of Italy's population is over 65%.

Let's see how many of these celebs and pro athletes have anything beyond a slight fever.

There is little possibility that the virus was here in the US prior to January. We are able to sequence the virus from patient samples and watch it mutate in real time as it spreads from person to person. Based on these mutations, we are able to track it through time and sources of infection. All Washington cases originate from January and the cruise ship incident. Others like in New York and elsewhere can be tracked to Italy exposure or other international travel.

See this website : https://nextstrain.org/ncov

If you had a bad illness in early January or December, it wasn't COVID-19

Celebrities are also more likely to travel to Europe/Italy. I bet George Clooney has had the coronavirus nine times.
