Has anyone adjusted their retail shopping habits?

I have a fitting for some golf clubs scheduled in the Houston area on Thursday afternoon. Definitely don't need to go but would like to get a set of clubs to use as a socially distant sport.

I'm debating whether or not I should still go. I'm reasonably healthy and 31. I'll probably be working from home the next few weeks so won't have much chance of infecting older individuals.

You should be low risk and if you are working from home over the next two weeks even if you contracted the virus you will be in isolation.

Thanks. I'll ditch plans of going in my PAPR for the time being and just bring the hand sanitizer.

My son works at Academy in College Station, and said the place was pretty packed this evening... and the Ammunition section looked just like the toilet paper section at HEB.

Of all the places that might, I agree it could be Lake Jackson

What will ammunition do to fight a virus? People going to charge the hospital and demand a ventilator?

To protect yourself and family, if required. Pretty simple

If you're out and things get bad enough, people get desperate and could do harm to your family.

Police are being instructed to ignore 'minor' crime, including theft of person and burglary. Announced publicly. Criminals aren't the brightest bulbs in the best of times.

And if the behavior of people in stores hasn't given you pause re: the contagion of panic, well I don't know what will.

The golf course is one of the safest places to be and don't see any reason that they should close. I know mine will not close but this rain needs to stop!

I live in the Bay Area. We are on shelter in place. Not sure what your community is like but rather then being fearful or out for ourselves, my community is drawing together reaching out to neighbors to pick up what they need at grocery store if someone needs to go to reduce others trips out etc. I believe my community will come out more close knit rather then having to arm ourselves against anything.

Also, not sure where police have been told not to respond to minor things, there is nothing like that happening here.

I guess I'd rather see the good in people and what we can do for each other then plan to defend what's mine. I suspect when this passes we will each be alive and come out of this period of time with entirely different experiences, those we are looking for.

I'm curious about this bit also. Haven't seen any reports of police being told to ignore minor crime. I drove to work this morning and saw multiple people pulled over getting speeding tickets.

Re: not enforcing crime: Philly and ft worth so far.

I'm in San Antonio area. People are organizing and helping those at risk.

People are also reacting irrationally by filling carts and pallets with stuff that they cannot fit in their car. This type of totally irrational behavior gives me pause. For the most part it is non violent. But it has been proof in my mind that people are irrational when afraid.

Just found a link to the Fort Worth policy - essentially they are not making arrests for Class C misdemeanors when a ticket can be issued instead. They can still arrest for these crimes with the approval of a watch commander though.

https://www.kiro7.com/news/trending/coronavirus-fort-worth-police-will-not-make-arrests-low-level-crimes/IEEWIXWF4NCJNJVGYJQYSTMXSI/

However, this is not the same as your initial assertion that police were instructed to "ignore minor crime". They still intervene and still can write a ticket. So, while stuff like theft of less than $100 or simple vandalism won't get you an automatic ride to jail, police are not ignoring these crimes.

Interestingly, I've had some time dropped in my lap and have cleaned and organized my pantry and freezer. I have a couple of marinated blocks of something unknown in my freezer which we will turn into mystery dinner and eat from what we have here which is nothing but good for us and allow the people whose fears have taken over the groceries on the shelves.

Still unclear how hoarding food is any different then hoarding ammo. I am glad I am not afflicted with either of those fears. My focus is on what good can come of this. Extra time with my son who is stuck here with me, long hikes in beautiful hills with time to look around and appreciate nature, organizing my home and reaching out to neighbors and relatives to see how I can help them. Oddly, as upended and surreal my world on shelter in place is, I feel grounded and in touch with what matters. I will come out of this richer though not in the monetary sense as my business is ground to a halt and will be for a very long time.

This is so completely out of our control, it's a good plan to focus on things you can control. Today's idea, research learning how to tile and attacking my bathroom....probably good sense will put a stop to that idea but figuring it out will occupy the day...after my 5 mile hike in the hills I am taking the dog on right now.

I wish you all ways to find your own peace with this.

Yep, **** can get crazy when people are stressed and begin to panic or run out of supplies.

Not saying anyone is going to need ammo at their house necessarily, but if you have to leave the house, **** at stores gets crazy.

bay fan, I normally think you take too much grief on this board, but this is either terribly naive or deliberately obtuse.

We are not even one week into this at this point. If you do not think there is the potential for a huge spike in crime if this continues for very long, then maybe you should go re-read the thread about the masks being stolen from hospitals.

I don't think we are going to reach the point where people are boarding up their homes and defending their turf, but I also don't think it's completely unreasonable for people to take precautions against riots and/or home invasions. This is a completely unprecedented situation, one that will probably end up fundamentally altering our country in ways we cannot even imagine at the moment. Maybe in your neighborhood everyone will have enough to give to others, but that ain't how it's going to be in a lot of places.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Going shopping for the old lady across the street doesn't prohibit me from picking up a few extra cases of ammo. Hopefully won't have to use, but rather have it and not need it than vice-versa.

Im sure that's the case for the majority of your community.

But even in good times, your particular community has a high amount of sketchy people tripping out of their minds in public (I've got friends there now, and family who've lived there). I dont think they are exactly getting clean and pulling together, because people are sick.

And of course we'd all rather see the good in people. But there are those that dont. When one of those attacks my wife/kids, I want to protect them.

This is really common sense. Same as locking your car, locking the door at your house, setting the alarm on your house, etc etc etc. No one wants them to be utilized, but you sure hope they are if you need them.

Bango, I think many people preparing to defend their turf also likely have enough to help others but that isn't their mentality.

You are right, I am fortunate and live in an area where I am unlikely to be physically threatened and that allows me to focus on finding ways to help others not so fortunate. I've be through hardship and come out the other side. I am not rich, have earned everything I have truly on my own and am willing to help anyone as I am able.

My only defense is my two doodles who are willing to lick and wag anyone invading my home front to death. Different strokes for different folks.

Do you not see that this is the same mentality that resulted in no toilet paper being available? I am staunchly pro second amendment and I also believe that individuals are free to purchase what they want, but the run on ammo is no different than the run on TP.

No one needs 6 mos of TP to get through this and no one needs tens of thousands of rounds in every caliber to get through this.

But guess what? Because of the panic buying syndrome some people have no toilet paper and some people can't load their guns. Taking care of yourself and your family first is always a priority, it who in their right mind needs to plan for a year's long apocalypse at this point? Hell, half the people saying this is all overblown are probably the same ones with 300 rolls of TP and 100k rounds of ammunition!

IMHO... You should never wait for a crisis to buy ammo.

I never panic buy ammo, I buy it when I use it and occasionally increase my stock when things go on sale.

And that is perfectly rationale and reasonable. You probably have a large stockpile built over time that in no way affected anyone else's ability to purchase ammo.

It's all the people that run into a store and use their arm to funnel an entire shelf of ammo, TP, or whatever into their basket that are the problem.

Agreed. Why people are panic buying TP is beyond me... I understand the surge in food demand as a number of people I know eat out all the time or just buy food for a day or two. Everyone buying 2 weeks worth of food is bound to strain existing supply chains.

This is a common stereotype that I completely disagree with. I would gladly give you a pistol if you needed it, and I don't even know you, as long as you and I had a common goal(which I am sure we do). Just like I would gladly help a neighbor who may be out of toilet paper, or shop for my elderly next door neighbor who lost her husband March 2 to agent orange poisoning.

Don't mistake preparedness and a desire to defend ourselves with a complete disregard for others. That couldnt be further from the truth.
