I wonder how many they infected while traveling home?

Quote:

They were on an overseas Duke trip where four members of the group became infected. Those four have had to remain in the overseas country until they recover. The rest of the group returned to Durham for self-quarantining and monitoring in their off-campus homes.

...

On Friday, Duke reported that three members of the Duke community who were on that overseas trip got infected with COVID-19.

So they travel as a group. 4 people in that group got sick while overseas. The other 15 come home... aren't you supposed to self-quarantine if your have been exposed? They KNEW they'd been exposed, didn't they? How many people got infected on the way to the airport, in the terminal, on the flight(s), in the terminal at home, baggage claim, on the ride back home? How many of these people went out and partied over the weekend?

This is so irresponsible. UGH.

Yes. But my first thought is when did they leave for the trip. I would have left as recently as maybe a week ago. Hell we watched Vanderbilt-Arkansas and TCU-KSU just last Wednesday at the conference tournaments in front of crowded arenas in Nashville and Kansas City.

Depends entirely on when they left. But you are right. They probably infected thousands.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

Interesting that they declined to say what country they went to. Why?

Also, HIPPA rules are ridiculous in this case.

Sorry for not knowing anything about the subject, but what is HIPPA?

Patient privacy rules. They basically don't let anyone in the healthcare industry disclose any of your personal information.

HIPPA is, one would presume, an allusion to a legendary Football Forum thread where Holden trolled the Okies ("HIPPA violation!")

HIPAA is an federal law that protects patients' privacy.

We always say this behavior is "so irresponsible" but do you really expect them to give up their likely non-refundable tickets to get home and pay whatever it would cost to stay in the other country for 2 extra weeks and buy another last minute ticket home after that... Just in case they might have gotten the virus?

If we want people to act responsibility we all need to share in the financial burden. It's not their fault things went down while they were overseas and after they saw what happened to their friends they probably wanted to get home asap.

There is a current situation at my college where the administration hid behind HIPPA to not inform anyone else of a positive case among the health professional students. About 30 students, 20 faculty and 5 patients were in the room with the positive case while that person showed symptoms = were spreading. This occurred last week, and the positive case only informed their fellow students about it today.

Should the college have alerted everyone or not?

HIPPA rules are in place for a reason, but should not be something to hide behind. It is very possible to alert the public, or a select group, of the possibility of exposure without releasing a person's name, age, gender or other detailed information. I see no harm (or violation) in a blanket statement that a person traveled from airport A to airport B on xyz airline.

If a kid gets lice at school, they give a blanket notice to parents and teachers to notify them that there is a case of lice. They don't say what student. There is no violation.

They were in Israel. A couple got sick at the beginning of the trip and basically were crammed onto tour buses for a week with the other, who also got infected. The Israeli government tested them all and the ones who were negative were told to get the **** out. They had no choice.

It is there to protect confidentiality of any patient. Not to hide illnesses from the public. If a college used HIPAA as their excuse for not notifying others of the illness they were wrong.

A University of Florida College of Dentistry student who treated patients is among the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Gainesville.

The student, who traveled to Portugal over spring break, continued to work in the school's clinic, despite not feeling well, he told his classmates in an email shared with The Sun.

The infected student said he was tested on March 9 and received the results indicating a positive diagnosis March 12. The college suspended clinical activities for students later that day.

The student also said university and College of Dentistry officials asked him not to communicate about his diagnosis because it complicated how UF must respond.

"I was asked to hold off on a global communication by the college and UF, because it complicates how the university must response as they are still trying to get a handle on this moving target," he wrote.

Most or all of them left after finals (end of February) to a country with no known cases of the virus. They were all checked for a fever before being allowed to Come back to the states. The ones who tested positive stayed in country. All of them who came back have been self quarantined since getting back to Durham. Just wanted to share some clarity before calling a bunch of people you don't know "irresponsible".
