It seems that the restaurant supply chain is separate from the food store supply chain and a lot of restaurants are selling milk, eggs, bread etc. to make up for lost revenues. You might check with local restaurants.

These threads are very interesting, but I keep wondering and hoping when they will stop.

I'm sorry that you guys are having trouble finding supplies. I got nearly everything I needed at a neighborhood wall mart in Fort Worth yesterday morning.

I had to buy some weird Hawaiian hot dog buns and settle for the last loaf of bread on the shelf tho so it wasn't perfect.

Hopefully the grocers will catch up to the idiots SOON.

Probably because they don't care about the rules. Is the government going to tell them they cant when they're barely making it and people need/want those items. Plus, lots of restaurants already sold bread or gallons of tea. Many are calling them sides.

I believe it started with restaurants trying to get value from items that were going to go unused once traffic dropped. The places that are remaining open realized they can provide a service especially in small towns where the stores are not Resupplied as often. From what I have observed the restaurants cannot possibly be making much money (the prices are normal grocery cost). It helps the public and helps the restaurant keep employees, so temporarily circumventing regulation is a win-win

Have they closed down small town gas station bars? They never run out of keg beer.

Not having any trouble in McKinney finding food. Paper products and cleaning supplies are a different story.

In McKinney too. Chicken is really the only "issue" in terms of things not being available at my stores and I hate chicken. I eat it, but really it's not my favorite meat. Just a great source of lean protein. Pork, beef, turkey and eggs are all better. More fat tastes better. Plus these have been available (minus the eggs). I find it funny actually that red meat has been so available. It's more nutritious than chicken breast overall and considering the average American's diet, I doubt that most people hoarding lean chicken breast are actually avoiding processed foods or trying to "lean" out. They are also most likely hoarding "essentials" like Oreos, crackers, dip, etc. Red meat has gotten such a bad rap as "unhealthy " when that couldn't be further from the truth. So I happily grab the red meat I need go about shopping.

They rolled out TP and paper towels while I was in my local Kroger yesterday. Only about 4 of us grabbed anything and no one was hoarding. Which made me feel good. Almost everyone either grabbed 1 or 2 packets with most just getting one. Nothing like all the videos going viral of people grabbing paper products as if it were 1983 and these were Cabbage Patch dolls before Christmas.

Why haven't the prices gone up on the items with the lowest supply/highest demand?

Anti-price gouging laws.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Check local meat markets, many times they'll also have eggs in stock, I know Stone Cold Meats in League City had a TON of stuff yesterday.

Time to get creative, check convenient stores, Dollar Generals, etc.

I have been wondering lately if the recent shortages are moreso due to a legitimate spike in demand caused by a large amount of the population decided to prepare food at home rather than eat out as they normally would.

Every action can have an equal and opposite reaction. If we put "market prices" on these items then we have $10 for a loaf of bread and $25 for a 12 rolls package of toilet paper. With all these high prices on necessities, poor people will riot. We will have women getting shot in the parking lots because their basket of groceries is worth $1,000. Do this and Trumps chances of getting re-elected are very low.

There are several problems here. One is our JIT (just in time) economy. Businesses have been setup to work off of JIT and not waste capital on storing up for rainy days. Manufacturers can't just wave a magic wand and make 300 million extra rooms of toilet paper appear. Same with wipes, cleaning supplies, bread, eggs, cows, etc.

We have all had since late January to prepare for this. If you're not prepared don't blame anyone else. If you're oblivious to our JIT economy, then don't blame anyone else. If you believe govt officials saying we have supply, that's your gullibility. If they told the truth about how much supplies we have stocked up there would be a huge panic. Do you want that?

We are barely a week into an event that will last months before we get a break. With the probability that we see a second wave and huge spike next winter. So be prepared!

Between Rockport proper, the greater surrounding area and tourism I'm sure the Rockport HEB is supporting far more than the posted 10k population. And when something like 20k people decide that instead of shopping for that night or that week they need to shop for a month's supply of food then the demand will always far exceed the store and its supply chain.
I'd guess a lot of WFH people, with a second home in the area, chose to hole up down there.

I just responded to a post from a lady in our neighborhood that went on a rant about Sam's being out of toilet paper. She says she got their at 6:45 and waited until they opened and admitted she didn't need anything today but wanted to get extra supplies "just in case". She is complaining saying Sam's isn't prepared or helping people.

This is something that is making us leery about coming back home from the Canary Islands. People here, even when the lock down was announced, just went and got their few essentials for the next few days.

Now, a week into lock down, people are going to the store to buy maybe a days worth of supplies. Their daily walk to the store is their one chance to get out of the house, aside from walking their dog. (you can only go out by yourself and it can only be to go to work or to get groceries or medical supplies.

The grocery aisles are completely full. There are a few things that are a little lower than normal, but other than that, it looks like a regular day. No one wants to hoard because they need their excuse to get out of the house.

It has something to do with it, but the real problem is the people who are buying 3-5 times what they usually buy. Grocery stores have already stated this.

Panic buying is selfish and dumb.

If you want a good laugh, check out the plant-based meat section of your store if they have one. Fully stocked, and ready for ethical eaters!

I wish I was in Rockport, but not for the food! Can't fish right now, so WFH is really tough, not hitting a neighborhood pond. (fractured elbow)

I was in line at my HEB this morning for almost an hour, to get in the door. They only let 20 people in at a time. They have limits on most everything that is a staple, which is good. There was plenty of inventory except for TP and paper towels. Dad found paper towels at CVS and Walgreens. Others said to try for them at Home Depot and Lowes.

I went to Lowe's yesterday and noticed they still had quite a bit of bleach and paper towels. Then as I was leaving, saw some dip**** carrying two huge packages of paper towels.

I'm buying twice as much groceries. We are not hoarding but we eat out more than we should and we stopped to avoid exposure and my kids stopped eating lunch at school and I usually had a work lunch once a week. Now all of those meals are made with food from the grocery store. I think this is true for a lot of people.

I love all the people complaining about all the hoarders getting groceries while they are out trying to get groceries.

Just because people trying to do normal grocery shopping complain about the idiots running around and buying things in mass quantities doesn't make it ironic as your post implies. As a family one of us is at the grocery store 2-3 times per week. I have 4 large grocery stores within 10 minutes of my house and I like fresh food so we don't buy and freeze large amounts of stuff. If we lived far away, we probably would. In the two times this past week I've been to the store I've watched in disbelief at how much utter stupidity surrounds us in the world. Sadly those people appear to be in the majority.

Grocery stores should have set limits early on. Not blaming them, that should have been communicated to them early. Now they're playing catch-up.
