Wow, a real kick in the teeth. He was one of Kermit Davis's big recruits before all that went sideways, but hung around for the beginning of the Tony Barone era.
Led us to a really strong 93-94 campaign that included a trip to the NIT and a home win over the sips. Finished 19-11 overall and 10-4 in the SWC - him, Chuck Henderson and Brett Murry were the senior "glue", and Damon Johnson, Joe Wilbert, and Tony McGinnis were all really good contributors.
Beat the sips 85-84 at Jolly Rollie in January '94, made it to the finals of the SWC tourney before losing to the Sips 89-80 at Reunion Arena. Lost to UNO and Earvin Johnson in the first round of the NIT 79-73 in OT.
I was a sportswriter for the Batt that season, and me and a buddy took a roadie to Austin to see the rematch in February (A&M got killed). Edwards went all out diving for a loose ball at midcourt and flew over the scorer's table, knocking myself and Olin Buchanan (then at the Eagle) out of our chairs. A&M was probably down 20 points at the time but David Edwards was a Acie Law before Acie Law when it came to hustle and big-shot ability. RIP
