There is apparently an outbreak at what used to be called a state school, now we use other terminaology.

The article is a little old.

One there has died. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/public-health/2020/03/26/officials-fear-coronavirus-spread-at-denton-state-home-could-overrun-countys-medical-facilities/

They are just now ramping up testing\

How terrifying for these people with cognifive issues. I do mean terrifying.

And I imaging controlling the spread is going to difficult.

Heartbreaking.

Sad situation...and no doubt will get worse before better. Will keep following.

Hundreds of residents with cognitive disorders, many of whom can't even understand how to take steps to prevent getting the illness and 1400 workers servicing them. Seems like a guaranteed disaster. Just brutal.

Hoping for the best.

Did I read this correctly .... 400 residents and 1,400 employees?

Sounds unreasonable.....unless you've been there. Then it makes complete sense and may actually be a little on the lean side. Most of those individuals need a lot of attention, 24/7.

You have to realize these facilities do not function from an 8-5 schedule...it's round the clock, 365 day care. You have every position from security, to maintenance/grounds, food service, laundry, housekeeping and then obviously all the support care functions people with severe cognitive disabilities need.

God please bless these people and their caregivers. What a terrible situation.

No prior clue but FYI .... Texas has 12 of these facilities with about 3,000 patients and 13,500 full-time employees.

So I guess on average the Denton school is a little lean. I didn't know statewide totals, it was just a gut feel having been to the Denton facility multiple times.

I worked at this state school as a summer intern/coop doing civil engineering work. That site ran for all intents off grid and we did water/wastewater automation and distribution for the entire facility and it was getting upgraded.

I still get flashbacks at times to the 10 days I spent on site there.

IF things are still as they were then, the patients there were never going to be in a position to leave, ever.

To be honest, my assessment was very few of them even knew they were alive. This isn't a home for low functioning downs syndrome, it was mostly people in what would be brain dead but not on life support. (I apologize for not having better words to describe this)
