I follow many forums on TexAgs, and have never been bold enough to post, but I saw this story today and felt compelled to share.

Not sure of efficacy, but it seems like this device may free ventilators for the most serious cases.

Curious if our Aggie Docs have seen/heard.

Pretty cool. Never used one but guessing it is much more closer to true 100% FIO2 than a 100% NRB mask or 100% Oxymixzer (they have some en trained room air (21% FIO2) which lowers the delivered FIO2 below 100%.) That device would not help with hypercapneic patients however.

Very cool. They used this in Italy with some success. I was wondering why we haven't been using these helmets more.

We are bleeding in 15L NC below the 100% FFMs now to avoid intubation.

Yeah in that video from the ICU in Italy a week or two ago it looked like all of the patients were wearing those.

NC = nasal cannula. FFM = full face mask. O2 delivery devices. FIO2 = fractional % of inhaled O2. Room air sea level 21%.

Those are pretty fricking awesome. Run off of existing oxygen lines and only cost $162.

Plus the coolest thing I saw in that clip was that Virgin Galactic called with support and asked what they needed to increase production. The guy said more machines but didn't have the cash to buy them. Later they got a call from the machine manufacturer saying that somebody had paid their bill and the machines would be on their way!

You only go onto a ventilator because you're not exchanging oxygen well enough and you will die if you don't go onto one.

Daniel Griffin a MD/PhD in New York City (March 29) suggests in this interview he is seeing about 50% survivability for people going on ventilators. Anecdotal and YMMV
