Where are we on the use of masks?

It sounds like there will be a recommendation coming that they be used when out and about. I've been giving thought about about how to make some. What are your thoughts about taking a neck gaiter, fold it in thirds and putting a coffee filter in the middle third for extra filtration. Stretchy, form fitting and most of all, boss.

Share your ideas.

And this whole thread is a tremendous read on the effectiveness of masks:

The only reason they ever said that was so people would not hoard from healthcare workers. I get that, but what they should have said was, we recommend wearing something as simple as a bandana or scarf. I think everyone should be wearing a mask in public. Especially when you take what was said in the article here in to account:

https://texags.com/forums/84/topics/3104282

The City of Laredo is fining people for not wearing one. I am sure we will have some talking about that taking things too far, but if it can get a control on things more quickly then DO IT. It makes sense anyway because of shear numbers they say are asymptomatic, this could stop a least some of the droplets they could project.

So any thoughts on the efficacy of my idea of a buff and a coffee filter?

Or just the gaiter itself? Better than nothing. I have a feeling some of our construction sites will start requiring face masks / coverings and the neck gaiters are already popular with the workers to protect from the sun.

I'd do it and not think twice about it. Anything is better than nothing.

Literally anything is better than nothing.

The CDC and WHO dropped the ball in an incredible way, they should have day one been saying "Don't use N-95 masks... but PLEASE USE ANY OTHER MASK".

South Korea and Singapore are killing the curve because of it. The rest of the world just doesn't use them very often. It's time now to use masks.

I have to think when this is all over, and when the experts do a "lessons learned" analysis on COVID-19 and why the US had 2 orders of magnitude more cases 2 months into the war than the likes of South Korea, Japan or Taiwan (population factors aside) one of the key conclusions will be the widspread use of masks.

I think more layers is better than a single layer, and more filter like material is better than none. At least that is what I gather. So a single layer buff over nose and mouth is not as good as OE suggests, 2 layers with coffee filter.

Here is a no sew bandana one that I wore to HEB - I made it too big and it was hot, but folded as suggested it is several layers of cloth.

My daughter is making them for her R&D group at work. I'm glad to see they're suggesting wearing mask, any little thing we can do to slow this spread is a good thing.

Any guidance on whether this is necessary when jogging or taking the dog for a walk in a non-crowded neighborhood?

Not a doctor. But no way is this something I will wear when out by myself exercising. 6 feet or more distant from other humans. Hands away from face. Use sanitizer. Wash hands.

I wouldn't use a mask in those circumstances either. But if I need to go to the store or other places where there are people and social distancing is dependent on others too, I'd use some form of mask.

for cloth ones, don't you need a new clean washed one each time you go out?

I can see situations where people would reuse a cloth one without washing it.

Yes. I've read to have several, and either wash (if they are washable) or put in plastic bag for 5 days and rotate them based on this:

Put in the oven at 160 for 30 mins.

I ordered three neck gaiters from Fincognito. 25% off with QUARANTINE discount code. I'll swap out and wash after using.

I don't think by mid summer (June/July) you'll be needing to wear masks outdoors. UV light alone in a 95 degree day will help, plus by them hopefully we have hit our mark where this is nipped in the bud around June 1 based on all models.

Still might be a good idea to wear them indoors or when around many people. But not in a 100 degree day miserable during outdoor activities.

From March 10th:

Quote:

"I feel like we're not really being honest with the people. The data, we've looked at this very carefully, is really just about breathing air. And that's a hard thing to stop. So keep doing the hand washing, but don't think that's going to stop this disease"

Cloth surgical masks are about protecting others from what you breathe out, the N95 masks will protect you from breathing in harmful particals.

I definitely think masks are a good idea, but I also don't underestimate the panic buyer.

If the CDC recommended a mask 3 weeks ago, even while saying please don't purchase N95 respirators, etc., everything from surgical to Halloween masks would be off the market and healthcare providers would be even worse off than they are now.

Precisely. That's why an official "mask decree" hasn't been issued yet.

That and I think the CDC doesn't want to give the impression that you're OK to go do whatever you want if you have a mask on.

I think as soon as people hear that a mask helps and is recommended then everyone goes back out with whatever homemade mask they've got because 'Hey I've got a mask'.

People need to just stay home and not worry about whether a mask helps or not.

A church friend who has a PhD said,a group of ladies are making masks using Filtrete MPR 1500 HVAC filter material. I looked at the specs and claims to filter out viruses. She said someone with a hospital recommended. Make that work better than a coffee filter

I have several HEPA filters I use for wood working. I was considering cutting one up and folding it inside a neck gaiter... Has to be better than nothing.
