Most of the goal when wearing (especially homemade masks) is for asymptomatic people to prevent spreading to others

A bunch of poppycock. Where are you going to find masks? And really a bandana is going to do good? Last thing this world needs is more stuff for "Karen" to be a narc about. If social distancing is working then you don't need masks. And likely it could make it worse for those not use to wearing them.

Why don't you read some of what's been posted?
I'm growing really tired of folks with your attitude.
Maybe if our "experts" at CDC and other organizations, tasked with the duty of preparing for such things, deny the effectiveness of facial covering long enough, they won't ever have to explain why there was a shortage to begin with, or be held responsible for not recommending it soon enough, or have to explain why healthcare workers are in some places being told that they are not allowed to use "homemade" options.
For the past week i've been wearing a Buff folded over to 4X thickness. It stays put and is the perfect size to just cover the mouth and nose. You can also slide a filter in between the folds. Buff brand makes a really nice cooling model too.
If you are looking for reusable cloth masks, Etsy seems to be the place to go. But they are selling out fast. I bought some with a pocket for a filter. As mentioned before you can use a vacuum cleaner bag or a HVAC filter and cut it down to size. Anything above a filtrete 1500 will get you some level of virus filtration.

That's what I'm planning to do, sticking a piece of filter material from an MPR 1500 hvac filter between the folds. I ordered three neck haiters from Fincognito this morning. They were on sale for for $15.

Governor of Colorado just asked that everyone wear masks when going in public. Encouraged people to make them from old t-shirts.
Based on that Stanford paper that provides about 50% efficiency which I guess is better than nothing.
