Ethyl alcohol works just as well. I don't know what the stocks in liquor stores are like these days, but I bought a big bottle of everclear a few weeks ago and have even made hand sanitizer from it.

It's harder to find than toilet paper.

Just like with hand sanitizer, virtually all being produced is likely being diverted to medical facilities.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

The FDA is also making it more difficult than necessary for new manufacturers to produce this stuff. Stupid. Get out of the way. We know alcohol works. We don't need a dang test to prove it.

If you want to use it for disinfecting purposes, it needs to be between 60-70%. Anything less wont work, and anything higher can actually dehydrate the cells, which preserves them until they are rehydrated again.

They shouldn't be making it hard for new manufacturers, but the FDA still needs to make sure that what's being sold is the appropriate concentration.

Along with the alcohol, all the aloe Vera gel is gone from people home brewing their own hand sanitizer.

In Houston a new Distiller is making sanitizer. They are asking for a donation (I don't think they can sell it). Got a 750 ml bottle today.
Google William Price Distilling Company.

Pretty sure others are also doing this around the State.

Make some ever-clear... Its not that hard, or so I've been told. If hillbillies in Kentucky can manage how hard can it really be.

They won't relax the requirement to add a denaturant to make it taste bitter and deter people from consuming it.

Distilleries that make food-grade alcohol don't want to add this component because they don't want to contaminate their equipment.

I still have at least a month's supply of dihexidrine gluconate. Wash my hands with soap and hot water and then sterilize before leaving and then with soap and hit water when I get back.

I got a bottle at Dollar General a month ago. I am saving it for when I run out of hand sanitizer and my one container of clorox wipes. I have two small hand sanitizers.

Did not know things like ever clear would work.

I have had luck finding it at Sams.

Edit to add, I did have to ask where it was because it was in a bottom shelf, and had not been fronted. Never would have seen it otherwise.

Alcohol is used as a general disinfectant, not just to kill coronavirus. It's true that lower concentrations may kill some specific cells (yeast, for example, are affected at pretty low concentrations), but different organisms have different tolerances, which is why 60-70% is the standard. In fact, not even all alcohols perform the same (which is why methanol isn't typically used as a chemical sterilizer).

I tried it with Everclear and it was a total fail. In fact I haven't had much luck with isopropyl alcohol either. I follow the recipes on YouTube and they fail. Does it matter the type of aloe Vera gel you use?

Try Everclear and agar. My wife made a compound three weeks ago. It is thinner than store hand sanitizer but it works

These guys are very legit. I know their ceo and sales director.

I feel like their prices are too high but they tell me raw material pricing has shot up and it's a new resource they're sourcing.

Anyway, good company and good people if you're looking for bulk hand sanitizer.

Yes, I did read it.

Do you understand that the purpose of alcohol/hand sanitizer as a sterilant isn't to kill one single organism?

There are other organisms that can be killed by lower concentration of alcohol, too. But it isn't effective to make sanitizer that kills only a few types of organisms. Higher concentrations (80+%) are also effective on some microbes, but we don't make and sell that, either because it's ineffective on others (like spore formers).

The 60-70% is a standard that's been around for decades after studying the effects on a whole host of different organisms. That ratio has been found to be most effective on the widest range of different microbes.

If an individual wants to use whisky at home to disinfect their hands from coronavirus, that's one thing. But, if you're going to do that, washing with soap and water is just as effective.

Making and selling hand sanitizer and/or alcohol disinfectant to the mass market at that low of a concentration is pointless. We don't sell sanitizer for each different germ that is out there.

And that's one study. One study doesn't "prove" anything, despite what that article claims. We aren't going to change the standard for disinfectant based on one study that doesn't even appear to be peer-reviewed.

Here is an example of a peer-reviewed study on this topic.
