We really are going to have issues reopening the economy if such benign mandates cause so much anger.

I am starting to think the "Open it all back up" crowd is really just the "I don't want to be told what to do about ANYTHING" crowd.

Many of them just don't seem to want to give on anything.

I've been watching the Washington model and taking screenshots to compare. The state of Texas model on April 10th had an April 13th forecast increasing to around 35 deaths per day with a forecasted peak of 66 daily deaths on April 24th and total deaths of 2042 by August 4th. NOW.... after 3 additional days of data with only 28,11, & 17 deaths, the model has been revised, moving the peak day out to April 30th with peak of 71 deaths per day and a total of 2704 by August 4th.
So the better we do now, the worst it gets! Plus multiple national headlines saying "Texas hasn't seen the worst yet!"
I saw that too. We had way less than projected, so all they did was move it to the right. Gee do you think we're having less than the projected, period???

Idiots projected 34 deaths today. Oh whoops only 17 today. Can't wait to see what they do with that.

Add another 58 cases today and 2 dead.

856 total. Last 2 days it has jumped big.

They don't give age range anymore. I believe it is in the homeless population now.

It was 774 yesterday so that's a jump of 82 today, which is the largest increase so far.

Restrictions just keep getting tighter and tighter in Austin, with almost every business being closed. Not adding up.

Meanwhile, Austin opens up the parks today. So confused. :/

Actually the more we do this the farther the peak and the longer gov has an excuse to keep you locked up. I know this is not pc however statistically speaking Texas is on track for less than 3000 deaths by Covid, 2017 we had over 11,000 deaths attributed to the flu.

We can debate all of the reasons why this has not been as bad but it is time to move forward with people using their best judgement and get the government out of it.

So in Austin, I am being told to wear a cloth mask and NOT a N-95 respirator mask because those are for use by others.

I have a few N-95 respirator masks (from wife) If I wear one, will I get yelled at?

I have a few left over from buying them to mow the yard (allergies kill me) and I'll wear em. They were laying around my work bench so I doubt a hospital wants em anyway.

Unless you don't have one there isn't a downside to wearing a mask at this point. The more everyone plays along the faster this **** will be over with.

For the love of all that is holy, the better we do at slowing the spread, the LONGER this will last, by definition.

I live in Wilco, so tomorrow I fully expect to be told to wear a mask while doing anything, and I'll comply. But this worn out tale that if we just all stay home or wear masks or whatever social distance method is most popular at the time, this thing will be over quicker, is a giant crock of ****.

Don't wear gloves. Wash your hands. People wearing gloves are way more likely to spread **** all over the place.

We have had that rule in place in Hidalgo County for the past 10 days and it is a nothing burger. When everybody is wearing a mask it really is no big deal and yes, it helps limit community spread.

What's the next new order of local gov't? Obviously, we're not doing enough to slow down the spread.

Exactly. Next will be a mandatory app to track everyone's movement and make sure you didn't come in contact with someone that is infected. Sounds great right? A morning burger because it's all part of the common good?

*****that. That location tracking will NEVER go away once it's implemented. You will always and forever be readily tracked by the government. And that's not a tinfoil hat statement.

We're actually doing a great job of controlling the spread in most Texas counties when you look at things like hospital capacity, icu beds, etc.

The measures put in place were done so to flatten the curve. We've done a DAMN good job of flattening the curve in Texas. Unfortunately, flattening the curve has come and gone and now that we've somewhat gotten used to this new life, I think we'll keep extending the lockdowns a couple weeks at a time as we try to test vaccines and therapies. We will gripe a little bit but we'll still try to comply because none of us want to be the reason that next person dies. At some point, if no vaccine or reliable therapy is available, I think people will start to push back on the next "extension". At that point, government leaders will have to come up with a new strategy.

no if you cough on the nozzle.

Masks are not for you, they are for everyone else. Using a mask makes everyone assume they are already a carrier of covid-19.

You can still get the virus through your eyes while wearing a mask.

a license is a prerequisite to driving on public roads. It is a credential.

A mask is a credential to being in public space during this time?

I get this - the numbers in Austin are not bad as far as case spread, death. Holding pretty steady, so why tighten the reins. Makes sense. What do you think Austin should do next? What do you feel the best path forward is as far as city or county guidance?

I'm guessing, and maybe it's wishful thinking, is that they are trying this to see what compliance is like. If people comply, maybe it helps open up some types of non essential businesses. Maybe not businesses where 10 or more would congregate, but if everyone wears masks willingly maybe they gain confidence we can resume some normal activities - with masks and other guidance in place. I admit I may be optimistic about the next steps I envision after this, maybe they are just idiots and exercising their power to control us and its entirely unnecessary. If this doesn't lead to anything else, then I would agree it does not make sense.

I am fine with the masks. We need to start opening up businesses.

We actually need to keep the infection rate constant as long as the medical community can handle it. Otherwise we will take forever to get herd immunity. (This in moderation).

More masks and more business.

assume you have it under control with current residents. But you also want to open up business and bring in visitors from other communities. Wouldn't you want those individuals to prevent bringing covid back into your community? So passing a mask ordinance ahead of reopening for business just seems smart.

Idk. Maybe this just doesn't bother me too much.

I'm with you. If the masks lead to getting people back to work, then let's do it. However, with Austin's history of leadership, I'm not all that optimistic that they will use the masks to help us get back to work earlier.
