So what protocols have they put in place to protect against asymptomatic carriers coming for surgery?

screening, no visitors, masking, social distancing, increased use of spinal and LMA's to avoid intubation, clearing the room during intubation, new protocols for extubation, face shields for all PACU staff in addition to masks, n95s plus surgical mask use for OR staff... just to name a few of the changes to enhance patient and staff safety

Those all sound familiar - I am a simple layman, so I am not qualified to speak to all of them. The only thing I remember for sure was the no visitor thing - and that's even during pre-op.

I just know all the surgeons have been chomping at the bit to get back to work. Those trophy wives don't pay themselves!

Same as for OK hospitals which open tomorrow for elective surgery. Local news said screening a patient will take FOUR hours.

4 hours seems excessive as there's not enough test kits to test all patients coming in and with a 30% false negative rate it is of questionable utility. So you have to proceed as if all your asymptomatic patients have Covid.

That was why I was asking. But it sounds like they are just going to assume everyone is positive and act accordingly.
Sounds like a plan, provided there is enough ppe.

Thanks for the info

Would love to hear what others in healthcare are seeing?

I'm in a state that hadn't allowed this yet, but I'm hopeful that once we do we will see a big bounce instead of a trickle in

Yes, clearly a layman. You're comment speaks for itself. I hope you're able to work as well

My wife's work is down to 1/3rd normal, this might help get closer to 1/2. But she almost solely works with age 70+ patients so she will be financially hit for quite some time. But opening this back up certainly doesn't hurt, financially helps the facilities and health care workers involved, and provides patients with needed procedures.

None of the hospitals or ASCs where I do surgery are allowing anything other than urgent and emergent cases. The Section Chief needs to approve of each case, and they have to go through COVID testing if time allows (for adult cases). However, our Governor has opened up the state, and in two days I can go bowling and get my first tattoo. So there's that, which is nice.
