I encourage all of you that are trying to do the best you can to help your community but do not really know how, here's a tip: donate blood.

I went to We Are Blood in RR. They are taking this very seriously and measures are in place to make you feel safe/comfortable. This is the first time in probably a decade-and-a-half since I have donated blood. I was a little nervous and dont like needles, but that didnt stop me; Just Do it. The worst part was having to watch Joey Fatone host a game show during my 15 minute Whole Blood draw. In reality, it was a completely painless experience, and I didnt leave the lobby without making my appointment for July 3rd and if its on the calendar, I'm gonna do it.

It's safe, it helps out your community, and gets you out of the house for an hour or two (can you imagine?). You could actually be a superhero that saves someone's life, without you ever knowing...and that's amazing.

If you donate platelets, its more like two hours of alone time -- and you can just tell your significant other that you are saving peoples lives, without embellishing! How cool is that? . Bring your Bluetooth headsets and work computer if you want. But give back, either way. Every drop matters.

Way to go! Thanks for starting this thread.

At a minimum, I would strongly ask every healthy individual to donate a pint a blood a couple of times per year.

And for those who are a bit more adventurous, consider a platelet donation.

Thanks for giving! Especially at your local blood center. Means the world to patients in your community.

Summer is always a tough time on the local blood supplies. Be sure to give again in late July/early August to help keep it steady.

Platelet donors are hero's of another level! Platelets have a shelf life of 5 days, and it takes 48 hrs post donation to complete all the tests, that means they have to be used within 3 days or they expire! Always a need for platelets.

Donated this week. Gulf Coast Blood Center. They said they were slow at the beginning of the outbreak but word has gotten out and they have been steady. That's good to hear.

O- here. I donate every chance I get, and have for 10 years. I usually give double reds, but can check into platelets next time. I actually used to donate plasma back in college, so I've been giving blood/plasma for almost 20 years now.

I donated blood three weeks ago. Probably the first time since college, when I used to donate regularly, just for the snacks. How soon can I donate again?

I assume that they do a covid-19 test on everyone and discard blood from anyone who has the virus.

I also assume that they inform the donor if they test positive. Could this be a way to get a test if you are asymptomatic?

Currently. We do not test the blood for COVID19. It is not transmissible through blood transfusions. It is a corona virus similar to colds, SARS etc and there are no known transfusion related transmission of these types of viruses.
Unfortunately, there is also not a reliable test for covid19 that a blood center could utilize at this time.

O- is the universal red cell. Please keep donating double reds when eligible. You are part of a special group that is always needed to be on hand for trauma, kids and oncology patients. Double red is the perfect donation for your blood type.

Thanks for giving

I have been told that if you have ever had confirmed Lyme disease you can never donate blood again. Is this true? Also, is there a minimum weight you have to be to donate?

Minimum weight is 110lbs

I just read through the donor health questionnaire as well as the common medical conditions, no where is Lyme disease mentioned, so it would not be a deferral or a question we would even inquire about.

It may have been a temporary deferral in the past but I don't see anything in that regard either.

I donate platelets once a month, and have never been asked if I had Lyme disease.
