why isn't the relatively low hospitalization rate being treated like a game changer?

Hospitalization rates are 3-4x death rate in NYC

do you think the IFR is above 10% or closer to 1%?

sero studies from Italy and NYC seem to indicate the latter

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/06/ny-gov-cuomo-says-its-shocking-most-new-coronavirus-hospitalizations-are-people-staying-home.html

Quote:

Early look at data from 100 New York hospitals shows that 66% of new admissions related to the virus are people who were at home, Cuomo said.

Quote:

"This is a surprise: Overwhelmingly, the people were at home," he added. "We thought maybe they were taking public transportation, and we've taken special precautions on public transportation, but actually no, because these people were literally at home."

Quote:

Overall, some 73% of the admissions were people over age 51.

We are all going to get it. Staying at home doesn't prevent it, but it does wreck the economy.

People eat food from the store. The virus is everywhere at this point.

Staying home makes you feel safe, but does not make you safe.

is that what the data is showing? that new hospitalizations are a result of grocery store exposure?

I haven't seen that at all

Or their kids/visitors hanging at the park gave it to them.

Great thread. I'm in the UK, and the politicians here are absolutely frozen in fear with no idea what to do next. They played it off too long and now regret it. None of them want any more blood on their hands.

There is no exit plan from the 'stay at home' rules. It is just a full on government propaganda machine at this point:

'You're all doing a great job. Keep going. Stay at home. Save lives. Protect the NHS.'

It has gotten very tiresome and created a big split between people who have just started ignoring the rules and those drinking the propaganda koolaide and media fear porn. Some are literally demanding to keep schools closed until a vaccine is in everybody.

The politicians are in a no win situation at this point with the easy lowest risk policy of 'keep going'. It is both fascinating and unbearable at this point. So be glad most of you guys are in Texas.

For a good Twitter rabbit hole go check out Boris Johnson's tweets from the past few days. Then read the comments. It is fascinating.

In my London borough there are around 660 cases out of 280k+ population. They also made a large field hospital which hasn't been used at all because most regular hospitals are well below capacity. The old folks homes are however being crushed.

I always assumed you were in H-Town by your handle. I read the bbc everyday, and was surprised to see that the UK had the highest death toll in Europe, passing Italy.

Watching Belgium and Sweden for the contrast. Agree about Boris, nobody wants to touch this with a 10 foot pole. The issue is a tar baby, and there is no winning.

H town has been home base for over 15 years now. I'm on my third 2ish year work assignment somewhere else.

Belgium, Spain and Italy are all still ahead of the UK in terms of death per capita. They just love counting dead bodies at this point unfortunately. Something about lies, damn lies and statistics...

we have to admit that's easier said than done

we've utterly failed to protect long term care facilities to this point

but there's no reason not to make it the focus
BS. If that were the case, we would have catastrophic deaths in each and every one of those facilities and not just hot spots here and there.

Agree w/Cone.

It seems that the likely reasonable approach is "open with masks/stand apart"

This has been my feeling for the past few weeks. You cant stay locked down forever unless the worst case scenario is playing out.
