Maybe they will backtrack, but I would be very surprised at this point. Case in point: we were all told it would take a week or more to see signs of improvement from shelter-in-place or lockdown, but Texas is moving to phase 2 tomorrow just a week after phase 1 last Friday. It seems like there is no time to observe and react to data trends if they won't wait more than a week.

Talk me off the cynicism edge. It all just seems political and not scientific!
Nothing scientific. They don't want to have negative results in prior to continuing the path they are on.

I think part of this is the belief that herd immunity is the best immunity. We won't get there by staying locked up, so might as well ease back into this thing and start sharing some germs. Sweden doing pretty well is proof of this, plus you have 84% of NYCs cases coming from people that locked themselves inside for a month, so might as well say F it and get on with your life.

This is the kind of commentary that brings me back to this board again and again.

OP can always move to Michigan or Washington if he/she wants to live in an area under a protracted political unscientific lockdown for many more months.

We should focus our efforts on protecting the vulnerable (i.e. nursing homes and the elderly). Look at how Florida has handled the nursing homes versus New York. We need to do what Florida did.

The only way to control people is to put fear in them

That doesn't seem quite right.

I have known some people who could be controlled by alcohol. Others by drugs. And many by sex.

With the right inducement besides fear, many people would enjoy staying home.
