Floor traffic at Mike Regan's two RV dealerships outside Austin, Texas, is up 30% compared with last May. And the reason is fear.

Cooped-up Americans desperate to get out after months of lockdowns are dreaming of doing something-anything-that resembles a vacation. But a majority of them worry a second wave of the coronavirus is coming, and think politicians have pushed too fast to reopen. Unsurprisingly, when it comes to getting out of Dodge, the close-quarters of an airline cabin are a no-go.
That's where the "covid camper" comes in.

After a six-week hiatus, Regan said business has been so brisk that he may not have enough trailers and motor homes to meet demand. "The minute the campgrounds opened on May 1 and the governor turned everyone loose, our business went through the roof," said Regan, whose sales at his Crestview dealerships were down about 50% just last month.

I've been eyeing RV's for a few years now. It may pay to wait.

There won't be anywhere decent to camp unless you reserve months in advance. I struggled to find a campground for June 19th weekend, I wanted to go weekend before and settled for a spot that wasn't on my wishlist.

Like during an oil crash, in 6 months there are going to be an awesome amount of deals on barely used RVs, boats, etc.

I bet you can find some deals in the Permian Basin. Lots of use, live-in wise, but not much mileage.

The lame ass TPWD has yet to allow reservations for overnight camping.

I've loved having a motor home during this time. Even though official campgrounds are closed, we can always find a pretty spot somewhere to camp. Great to get out in nature for a weekend 1-2 times a month!

The manufacturers have been shut down. Then people started buying, and the lots have gotten empty. The factories are now trying to catch up. There will be some good deals if you order one, but you'll have to wait for it. Unfortunately, a used RV is the way to go because the kinks have been worked out, but there hasn't been a lot to choose from. I don't think there will be a lot of good deals a year from now. Manufacturing will not have produced a glut by then. My 2 cents.

I will say that if you have any business in Ohio, check out RV Wholesalers. Great prices, but order now.

Also, I know this is Texas, but how many people actually own cars for pulling these monsters?

You can pull a pretty decent sized travel trailer with a half ton truck.

I've looked at them off and on over the years. I think I'm going to go with a Class C and then tow my Jeep behind it.

I stopped by a boat dealership last week and they are sold out of almost every boat they have. The salesman said they couldn't sell anything for 3 weeks and then talk of reopening came up and they were over run with buyers. Cheap used boats may be on the horizon as well.

Ordering one right now will not get you a good deal. You'll pay full price and if you won't they'll say next. That's not how supply & demand works. You raise the price during scarcity. Not cut deals.

What are the good avenues to look for a used RV? Used lots, Craigslist, word of mouth? Anyone know of particular sites?

Yes, RV lots are a good place to look for RV's.

Also, Facebook marketplace and RVTrader.com. Craigslist is no longer a go to site, but doesn't hurt to check it since some personal sellers may not be caught up on what sites are now popular.

We got ours on Craigslist. Tucson/Phoenix tends to have a lot of good ones on sale.

If you reach out to people on rv share often times they are looking to sell. Also gives you a chance to try before you buy.

We just bought a used RV two weeks ago. We found ours on RV Trader. Facebook marketplace and Craigslist had quite a few listed, but it seemed like the folks who posted on RV Trader were more motivated to sale and wanted to make a deal. Most of the listings I came across on Facebook were people who just wanted to dump their note onto someone else or trade their RV for boat or diesel truck. I searched for a long time and the best people to buy from are retirees who paid cash for their RV and they either want to upgrade to something bigger or they just don't use it anymore. They typically just want to make a cash deal and sale at the NADA value. Trying to buy from someone who is in year 2 of a 10 year RV note is not worth your time because they have no incentive to drop the price.

Also, if you are looking to buy new make sure to check out RV dealers in the mid-west. I almost pulled the trigger on a new RV from a dealer near Chicago. Their new price beat any local Houston dealer by at least $4k since they are so close to the manufacturers in Indiana. Even with a transport fee of $1.70/mi they would have still had any deal beat by at least $2k. I came close but ultimately found a nice used one locally that was priced right at fair market value.

Why are Class C RV's so much more expensive relatively than Class B's?

I find the opposite to be true. Class B's, for their size and utility, are more expensive than larger Class C's.

You aren't seeing the full picture. There has been a lot of fluctuation, and prices are headed up. Think of the lockdown like tax season. There were some motivated dealers even with low inventories. Nobody was buying, and there was nothing on the lots. People who took dealer inventory or got in line for the units being built did okay. But very soon it will get tight as the dealers get less desperate.

Yes, there is a company in Ohio called RV Wholesalers, in Lakeview. If you can get up there to pull it home, they can beat Houston prices, and they have a better warranty plan as well. I'm not sure what brands they deal in, but I know they had Forest River, Prime Time, maybe Springdale, others. Happy to send you to the sales guy I talked to. He was very helpful, even though we bought local since my business in Ohio was cancelled.

I bought an RV in Michigan 6 weeks ago, just as it was for you it was $4K less than local comparable, gas was super cheap so $1.5K to deliver to Texas, and I kept a driver working and with income. FElt like a win all the way around.

My buddy sold his fifth wheel and got a Class A last year. His wife found a deal out in AZ. Was about 12K less than in the Metroplex, so they flew out and picked it up. Drove it home. He's very happy with it. That's an alternative if you're getting a motorhome instead of a trailer. Saved money and got a nice little trip out of the deal.
