What are the good avenues to look for a used RV? Used lots, Craigslist, word of mouth? Anyone know of particular sites?
We just bought a used RV two weeks ago. We found ours on RV Trader. Facebook marketplace and Craigslist had quite a few listed, but it seemed like the folks who posted on RV Trader were more motivated to sale and wanted to make a deal. Most of the listings I came across on Facebook were people who just wanted to dump their note onto someone else or trade their RV for boat or diesel truck. I searched for a long time and the best people to buy from are retirees who paid cash for their RV and they either want to upgrade to something bigger or they just don't use it anymore. They typically just want to make a cash deal and sale at the NADA value. Trying to buy from someone who is in year 2 of a 10 year RV note is not worth your time because they have no incentive to drop the price.
Also, if you are looking to buy new make sure to check out RV dealers in the mid-west. I almost pulled the trigger on a new RV from a dealer near Chicago. Their new price beat any local Houston dealer by at least $4k since they are so close to the manufacturers in Indiana. Even with a transport fee of $1.70/mi they would have still had any deal beat by at least $2k. I came close but ultimately found a nice used one locally that was priced right at fair market value.
Great advice. Thank you.
Yes, there is a company in Ohio called RV Wholesalers, in Lakeview. If you can get up there to pull it home, they can beat Houston prices, and they have a better warranty plan as well. I'm not sure what brands they deal in, but I know they had Forest River, Prime Time, maybe Springdale, others. Happy to send you to the sales guy I talked to. He was very helpful, even though we bought local since my business in Ohio was cancelled.
