Is 2 week self quarantine necessary?
Plenty of guidance from the good ole CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/disposition-in-home-patients.htmllazuras_dc said:
KidDoc, not that I don't agree with that protocol but do you have a reference for that ? I'm trying to nail down protocol for my office in the event of a 1st or 2nd party exposure.

Not generally. The current guidelines suggest testing 3-5 days post exposure and if negative you should be good. This is assuming it is a accurate PCR nasopharyngeal swap with a low false negative rate.
The 14 day post exposure quarantine was started before widespread testing was available. Now that it is possible to get tested you should be able to mostly trust that result.
That is a bit early but still in the 3-5 day post exposure window. The only risk of early testing is a false negative.Complete Idiot said:
My wife ate a restaurant Monday night and today got notified by the restaurant that two workers tested positive. So she scheduled a test like two hours ago and is getting it now, it's less than 72 hours since eating there and I was thinking it was too fast to get a test but apparently not per the doctor she spoke to. Low likelihood she got it but she is around at risk people and needs to know for peace of mind. More importantly than the illness I want to know how the brain scraping felt.
My symptom showed up on the 13th day after exposure.Aggie said:

The current data says yes, assuming it was a nasopharyngeal PCR which seems to have the lowest false negative.lazuras_dc said:eric76 said:My symptom showed up on the 13th day after exposure.Aggie said:

Curious if you had tested at day 3-5 if it would shown up though

Your child would be a tertiary contact. For some reason it seems like children do not spread COVID well. If your child started to show symptoms I would get the child tested but the odds of it passing from the + mother to her child is high-- but child to child seems to be rare based on current data.AgsMyDude said:
Doc, just found out a Mom from one of the kids at daycare had her test taken Thursday and came back positive. Worth seeking out a test now?

Nobody knows why.
Yeah even child to adult appears to be rare. That is based on current data and may prove to not be true with time. The lack of child to child spread and child to parent spread is a very confusing aspect of this virus that is not consistent with most respiratory pathogens.AgsMyDude said:KidDoc said:Your child would be a tertiary contact. Thanks! What about from child to adult? I guess my worry is Mother - > child - > day care provider (just 1 person) -> our child.
Provider has been very proactive. Doorstep drop-off, kids must chance shoes before entering, etc.
Above my pay grade. The risk for the students overall is low if they are healthy. The risk to staff can be a significant problem. Plus the liability of a system that forces kids to attend then can expose them to a potentially lethal virus. THe first kid that dies from it due to mandatory school is going to be an ugly law suit.CowtownAg06 said:
Sorry if you've addressed this but given that, do you think schools should start back as normal?
Yes she needs to get tested and self isolate until the result is back. The rest of the family can take reasonable precautions but does not need to self isolate at this time.discobrob said:
My wife had close contact one of her friends last Monday. Outdoors, but still together for several hours. The other person felt ill Wednesday and received a positive test result today. It's been 8 days since my wife's last exposure, but should my whole family test and quarantine until we know the results? We are showing zero symptoms.
That's only day 11 so I would make the appt just in case she does start showing symptoms.discobrob said:
the soonest she can get a test is Friday. Is that even worth scheduling? If she shows no symptoms by then she's in the clear, right?

What do y'all consider symptoms worth going to get tested for?
I've had a mild headache today, no fever and a slight cough. No other material symptoms. I had a weird sleep pater
My son(s) are at summer camp and my oldest had a cough for a bit, but no fever, etc.
So odds are it's just a cold, but curious what I should watch for.
For what it's worth, we haven't gone out in a meaningful way in weeks. Just to the grocery store and Church (which is taking very good precautions and we wear a mask when out in public...
edit....my son change the emoji. Meant it to be a question mark.
A doc friend of mine pointed us to a kids med clinic in town that does adult tests. Had to schedule a video screening, and then from there they schedule a test for you. Getting the video screening was difficult, but we were able to get one at 5pm yesterday. The next test available was today at 4. We'll see how it goes. My wife's friend that tested positive today had her husband test positive last night. So.......AgsMyDude said:
Nice! How'd you find it?
this is where rational leadership at the state and federal level should come into play. They must set reasonable guidelines that can be realistically followed so ISD's etc can continue on without fear of lawsuits.KidDoc said:Above my pay grade.
