We're expecting mid-September and I was wondering what advice you've been given by your docs regarding care for the newborn baby during all of this.

PPP gear for people who want to see the baby? Should I be trying to order face shields, etc?

Don't let anyone else see the baby for two weeks, 2 months, 6 months?

My step-kids will be going back to school in the fall, anyone been told to home school?

Basically any advice and things you've been told would help.

This is my first and I'm a baby moron so this stuff keeps me up at night sometimes.

Thanks.

Our daughter was born in May at TCH. Basically, we've let each set of grandparents (who live out of town) come visit and see the baby once. My dad, who can't socially distance because of work, did not hold the baby. We made my mom and sister wear masks while they held baby.

We dunno if this Overly cautious not cautious enough but this was how we determined we could live with ourselves and manage the risk. We Figured at the end of the day and relationships between baby and relatives will be developed
Over years and baby won't remember any of this anyway so better safe than sorry.

And honestly we are more concerned with one of us getting sick and having one person have to take over as primary caregiver for 2 weeks.

My daughter is due here in a few weeks, and I have been wondering the same about her grandparents. Did your pediatrician give any guidance for this?

Our son was born mid-May and we are in the suburbs north of Dallas. Our pediatrician recommended allowing family members to visit and hold the baby as long as they wear a mask while holding the baby and wash their hands before doing so. We have limited this to immediate family who all live locally here including our parents and our siblings. We will hold off on extended family for the time being.

My co worker had a baby in April. Her doc did not want any visits till a month old and then only grandparents. I am guessing this is an ask your doctor questin.

We had a baby early March, right at the onset of the pandemic in TX. Our pediatrician recommended we take great caution until the 2 month mark, at which point she felt comfortable exposing the baby to very limited family, like only grandparents with masks and clean hands.

With what has been learned since then, she might have given us a green light to be around grandparents with proper precaution from the beginning, but back in March the guidance was extreme caution for 2 months, which apparently is when their immune system becomes more competent. If we had the baby now, I think we would have felt comfortable having just our parents around from birth, provided that they were isolating themselves from any contact other than us and baby. Having an extra set of hands in those first few weeks can be a life saver, and with what is now known about the virus, the benefit probably would have outweighed the risk.

My wife and I had our son on January 23rd, so right before all of this went down.

But, it was peak flu season so we didn't really let him be held much or around people until he got his first shots at two months.

My only advice is, keep your circle small (family only), don't skip doctors appointments (get the kid all their shots), and really enjoy this time. I'm stuck at home with my son and I absolutely love it.

We had our second on April 1. I was the only visitor allowed at the hospital and we didn't allow anyone to see the kid besides our parents who were self quarantining for 2 weeks before coming over. Since he has gotten his 2 month shots we are letting more and more people meet him.

COVID seems to be fairly mild even in newborns. But, in general, infections are high risk under 6 weeks of age so limit contact as much as possible with good hand washing x 6 weeks. I would recommend masking for people holding her especially if they have not been able to stay home. You do not need a face mask as the face mask is to prevent COVID + people from spreading it to you through the eyes and I seriously doubt your infant is COVID +.

After 2 months and first round of shots you can likely open it up just avoid mass gatherings of sick people and kids.

Congrats! Try to get sleep now.

We had our 2nd on May 14th and this is identical to our situation, literally everything you said. He's officially 6 weeks old today so we'll be following your plan and probably getting a little more relaxed at 2 months.

Conversely, we're due in 2-3 weeks and our doctor told us a visit from grandparents should be okay, given they isolate beforehand (which they are)

Slightly off topic, but I was reading this forum a few days ago and a doctor, forgot who, said for unknown reasons that kid to kid and kid to adult transfer of COVID is not likely or not prevalent, etc. is this true or are there studies proving this, or just antidotal so far?

We have a K and 2nd grader this next year and they are wanting to know if we plan to do in person or remote learning this next fall... and we are trying to decide what to do. We both work so at home learning would be really tough. If we send them to school it seems likely they will eventually be exposed to it. At that point will they not be able to see grandparents in fear of an 80 year old catching COVID.

Lots to think about and decisions to make!

Also, back in April or so, I recall experts at the time saying that COVID may not be an issue at the time the kid catches it, but may have lingering effects later or Much later In life. Does that seem to be a thing or just not known yet?

So far child to adult transmission or even child to child transmission has not been documented.

Due end of September, easy keeping family away but what about siblings? Them being in school makes it tough spreading germs to a newborn. Being stuck at home with a newborn and 2 other kids is a test.

This seems to be a pretty big learning area right now, you're going to get a bunch of different opinions most likely. Again, we had our 2nd kiddo on May 14th. During pregnancy, mom to be is considered immuno-compromised so it's best to keep her contact with the outside world as minimal as possible.

What was a little surprising to me was after birth, both mommy and baby doctors were more concerned with mom's health than baby's when it came to covid. We were still advised to keep outside contact as minimal as possible for both while mom's immune system bounced back and baby's grew. 6-8 weeks after birth, both should be in a lot more stable condition.

At this point, we're allowing our parents to actually come inside and wear a mask around us but that's it. We still aren't allowing them to hold baby, but we're allowing them to interract with our 2.5 year old.

Happy to answer any other questions thrown at me since we've just recently gone through all of this. But again, this is all just our experience and going off of what our doctors (we love our pediatrician and OBGYN) tell us. You're going to get varying opinions and advice.
