Now the CDC is recommending babies being removed immediately after birth for up to two weeks. This is during the most important bonding time between baby and mother. The requirement for removal is mother is exposed to corona virus.

I have a baby due in September. What others experiences and to the doctors here what do you know about this happening?

If you read past the first paragraph, this is only recommended for covid positive or presumed positive mothers.
Even that is scary enough. Who makes the determination that a woman is presumed positive? That could be anyone with a cough. Also who is to say whats worse? A baby possibly getting corona virus or missing out on its most important two weeks of development in its entire life?

Your thread title is a straight up lie.

" The CDC recommendation notes the health risks and benefits of separation should be discussed with the mother and she should be involved in decision-making. "

Dont worry? How can I not worry about the prospect of some doctor saying my wife has covid or they suspect she has covid and taking my baby away for two weeks?

Geez, if you are that worked up about it, call a mid-wife and have your baby delivered at the house.

This. If you're genuinely concerned then talk to them about it now and if you don't like what they have to say, tell them you're taking your money elsewhere.

But given the fear-mongering lie of "being removed" in your title, I'm gonna bet a coke your real intention here is to troll.

No Dr gets to make that decision. You can refuse. It's your call as a parent.

It's just another a sensationalist newspaper article to get people worked up.

Is the CDC recommending Doctors consider separation when mothers have, or are likely to have, Covid? Yeah, they are.

They also recommend the same discussions when mothers have something like the flu, or RSV.

Quote:

Although it is well recognized that the ideal setting for care of a healthy term newborn while in the hospital is within the mother's room, newborns that become infected with influenza virus are at increased risk for severe complications. To reduce the risk of influenza virus transmission to the newborn, CDC recommends that facilities consider temporarily separating the mother who is ill with suspected or confirmed influenza from her baby following delivery during the hospital stay. The risks and benefits of temporary separation of the mother from her baby should be discussed with the mother by the health care team, and decisions about temporary separation should be made in accordance with the mother's wishes.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/infectioncontrol/peri-post-settings.htm

Covid is just another infectious disease that will follow the same infectious disease protocols for mothers and newborns that hospitals have been following all along for other infectious diseases. Nothing new about any of it.

If you trust your doctor to make appropriate decisions to keep your wife and baby healthy, then you should trust them to advise you and your wife when the time comes on the best way to make that happen. Your doctor's only goal is to discharge your family healthy, happy, and safe.

My wife and I are due in two weeks (although we think my daughter will come sooner). We've been trying to isolate as much as possible for this reason and also so that I can be sure I'll be there.

I have a friend who's in L&D at one of the big Houston hospitals who has told me that she's definitely seen a few cases where the baby was separated from a COVID+ mother. Now, whether that was a decision made purely by the doctor or in collaboration with the mother, I don't know. I suspect the mother was part of the decision.

Due at the end of August. This has always been a concern for us. We're totally isolating for all of August to make sure this doesn't happen.

Scary time to have a baby.

Due Sept. 22, but we're inducing on Sept 16 since previous two deliveries lasted under an hour and a half so doc doesn't want us having a baby in traffic.

Wife is taking a covid test 3 days prior and doc has recommended us going in complete lockdown starting sept 1.

Odd they didn't want to test me now that I think about it. I might need to double check on that.

I work in this area of the hospital as a nurse. It's recommended that a confirmed positive mom be separated from her baby but mother's are allowed to refuse this. I have yet to see a mother on our unit be separated from her baby. They stay in the designated room the entire stay. Even if dad is there. He is also not allowed to leave. Mask is required on both parents the whole stay. Baby is supposed to be in the crib or warmer area except for feeding if the mother is breast feeding. We as nurses can only educate what we have been told but the parents will ultimately do what they want in the room especially when the nurse isn't in there.

I also have to add that we have had mothers refuse covid testing and we treat them no different than a negative patient. Kind of annoying. Especially when I'm a pregnant nurse taking care of these moms that refuse the test.

Had kid 2 weeks ago. Masks all around, mom dropped hers after COVID test came back negative. I wore mine when staff was in the room. Staff told us the same approach would be taken as Lily09 stated.

No real change having a kid in COVID times except we didn't have to ask the nurses to keep the family out. Was a bit lonely for the 2 days after baby came and the snack room was off limits to non-staff, other than that it was a nothing burger. We were somewhat concerned going in as well but hospital staff was great as usual.

That's what I was curious about. They are testing my wife as she enters the hospital. Once it comes back negative, no need for the mask right? I can't imagine it's comfortable delivering in a mask.

It might depend on the hospital. I think my hospital "encourages" the moms to wear them while staff is in the room in labor and delivery and postpartum. Dad has to have his mask on when staff is in the room since he wasn't tested.
