Looks like it's going to be harder to go back to school than some were thinking.

My guess is.........sadly I bet we see schools close down at point this fall.

My 8 year old daughter has been attending daily summer camp at our church/private school in Spring for over a month now. They have not had one case of Covid 19. They keep the kids in smaller age level groups, but groups are combined when they go on field trips. They ride on the bus together, play on the play ground together and interact closely in doors as well. They are not social distancing the children and haven't had one staff member or child get the virus. Who cares if the kids spread it to each other? They do not need to shut down the entire school because some kids get the virus. The schools don't shut down when their is a flu outbreak.

That's amazing to hear and very happy that's been the case for you guys. Look, I didn't mean to try and say I was on one side or the other in terms of schools opening up or not. I simply saw the article and as this is something I think of as being as close to school as were going to get in the summer.....it might be harder to open up and stay open than we all think. That's all I meant by it.

Maybe it's more relevant in slightly older kids? Teenager age/HS level. K2 is ages 13-18 so that would explain quite a bit. Research seems to show the younger ones are much less effected by it so maybe those schools stand a greater chance.

These are just the times we live in. I can see an outbreak effecting the school. Multiple teachers getting it and the school closing or going completely remote. I can pretty much guarantee if their is an outbreak they will close the school.

It sadly might be much more likely than we all hope.

I wasn't jumping on you about the article....just frustrated that the media only reports the negatives and fails to write a story about success stories.
You are right on the money with what is going to happen when schools start. A few kids are going to get it and they are going to freak out and move to all distance learning.
My daughters school has released their plan and it sounds like a nightmare. A child will be kept home for up to 24 days even if their parent gets the virus. They will put the entire class into distance learning even if exposed by a secondary contact. It's a logistics nightmare.

This is awful, especially since it isn't what we've seen most stats say. My kids too have been in camp all summer.

No they don't close down for a small outbreak of the flu. Some campuses have indeed closed for larger outbreaks to sanitize.

But. . .will they close schools for an outbreak of Covid? You betcha they are going to. Why is this so hard to understand? The response to this virus has never been even remotely similar to our response to the seasonal flu. This has been the same response since March.

Reasons; Per CDC - 0.67 IFR, 2.5 R0. Flu - 0.1 IFR. 1 R0.

Debate the numbers. Say they are not accurate. But. . .this is the reality we are in. We are learning as we go, and using data however inaccurate it is. But this will in the short term never be treated like the flu.

Those IFR and R0 figures are for the total population not just the school or camp-age population correct? Isnt the Covid IFR for kids under 17 less than the flu? Yes covid is still really really bad for those over 70 but that is a vanishingly small amount of people associated with school and camp related activities.

Yep tysker. Much much lower IFR for students. That's not relevant though for how the virus will be mitigated. Even if the data supports treating this virus like the flu, for now a similar response is not going to happen.

Teachers are going to PPE up and hit the "frontlines." I consider us essential workers, and we must open schools. However, my wife is also a teacher. She is going to wear a mask and a face shield. No face shield for me.

Yeah, how dare they attempt to prevent a major outbreak.

Yeah how dare someone think that may be excessive.

I'm wondering why even try to have in person lessons if that is the protocol.

Same for my wife. She is 71 and teaches pre-kinder. I don't see how you can be there without hugging those little munchkins.

In Texas, we will probably see first three weeks of school year to be entirely online for many districts per TEA comish allowing districts to use this time as a transitional period. Personally, I predict the three weeks to be extended to at least the first nine weeks. But this would most likely require an EO from Abbott. TEA has said open campus or no funding.

Atlanta will be fully online for the first 9 weeks. San Diego and LA students will be online for the entire fall.

My daughter starts Pre-K this year. My heart hurts for her. She's going to be sitting in class wearing a tiny mask and a face shield. Little nonverbal feedback, teachers in scary PPE, no gentle and reaffirming touches on the shoulder. And hugs. So, so important. I really know this is going to be so difficult for your wife and so many teachers and little ones beginning their schooling experience.

She is much more likely to get it from another teacher.
